Publisher's Summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator Ann Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family’s scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.

Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed....

By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.

Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.

Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again - until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.

Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm.

Good Story - Why So Many

I am of two minds about this book. I'm a huge BDB fan and I love JR Ward's writing style but this book just didn't do it for me. To start I wasn't invested in the main characters. I just didn't care about their relationship. The story line was hard to follow until the end where it wrapped up and all the little pieces fell into place. Finally, there are four narrators and I am still scratching my head over that creative decision. At first I thought perhaps each of the main characters would have a unique voice but, for example, when the female protagonist was voiced by both female and male narrators I was left wondering why there was a need for four. I think this audio book would have been much better if there had been only one. I'm giving this book three stars for two reasons. First because it's the first book in a series and first books can sometimes stumble but then recover in the next one. Second, while all the narrators were great and very talented having four of them was distracting and unnecessary. Will I listen to the next in the series? Probably. Mostly because I'm curious to see where Ms. Ward takes us next. I'm holding out hope book two will be better and that there will be only one narrator.

Decent but not good.

I love DBD and the Fallen Angels. This story was exciting in the beginning then boring until the last few chapters. It ended abruptly. I just don’t like this new style of writing. I will still look forward to her other series.

Perfection

I was so excited for a new series from JR Ward, and as always, she didn't disappoint. The narration was on a whole new level and much more of a production. Loved this book!

I can't believe this is a JR Ward book.

Struggled to finish this. This is not something I would have expected from this great author.

Bummed

Let me be very clear here - I love love love Ward’s books. It’s only this one I didn’t care for.

It’s hard for me to get behind Ann. She’s really judgy and mean. It ruined the story for me. :(

Not BDB, but very good. Horrible female narrative

I did enjoy this book. It's definitely has the J. R Ward flair that we all know and love. The romance is good but of course in all her books conflicted with the characters having to find themselves. I love the mystery within the story. My only two problems where; I felt the ending was wrapped up a little too quickly and the female narrator was not very good for this story. In my opinion is was very monotone and occasionally made the men sound like idiots. With her sounding annoying and whiney. There were many times I almost stopped listening due to her narrative. Thankfully she was saved by the other two narrators. If the series continues and she is used I don't think I will purchase an audio version.

Too many narrators!

The story is pretty good, but I found the different narrators distracting and ultimately, annoying.

Fabulous Start To A New Series

Fabulous beginning to a new series from JR Ward. I have to admit I am not a huge fan of the BDB, so I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did.

Consumed starts out with a complete "he did not just do that" moment and then sets off on a fast-paced ride. The characters are flawed, but strong, brave in the face of danger, but scared to put their hearts on the line. I really liked the dynamic between Ann, a firefighter, and her family, and also for the complicated relationship she has with fellow firefighter Danny. When Ann sustains an injury that makes it impossible for her to remain on a crew, she turns to the Investigative side of the job. There are a series of suspicious fires that drive the plot with Ann's determination to flesh out the perpetrator, along with a sweet rescue dog who helps Ann begin to heal her spirit as well as her body.

Consumed is a suspenseful, fast paced read with a clever twist at the end, and a great cast of characters that I look forward to meeting in future books.

The narration is very well done, I liked that there were several narrators throughout as this helped with the large cast of characters.
