Have you ever encountered (or perhaps seen on Jerry Springer) a codependent couple that has one or both members of the couple display affection by being irrationally violent and merciless to perceived threats to the other member of the codependent couple? If not, this novel will display this dynamic in action, but not in consequence. When the main character decides to stomp around like an angry animal engaging mate-defense mode, he manages to turn differences in opinion between allies into scorched Earth, but instead of the many characters around the idiot justifiably judging him to be an idiot devil baby, they just go along with it.
As a result, I found myself unable to ignore the "man behind the curtain". The Wizard of Oz trick that all authors must maintain to keep the magic of the narrative alive was destroyed by this lack of verisimilitude.
Don't get me wrong. Vengeance fantasies are fun, and characters can indulge in them, but they have to do so in a way that reflects normal human psychology. This might have played well to the trailer park, but I think it is going to leave a large number of the audience groaning.
On the bright side, Gilliland seems to have learned how to narrate female voices by this point in his career and it isn't the audio poison we heard in the first couple of books in this series. Having said that, I found it difficult to understand the Russian accent he used for a certain set of aliens.

The only reason I'm not getting the next book is because of this.
the story itself was fun. I enjoyed the plot twist between books1 & 2.
Good, light story. Bad narration.
