Unlike the other arts, American literature has been a powerful, influential, and leading aspect of American culture. By turns sedate and mercurial and possessing a moral mind set of various social values, the American short story reveals in its pages the psyche of a growing, sprawling nation whose sense of destiny has always been larger than life. Story
What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

An interesting mix
Overall enjoyable; but several of these stories were quoted dated in terms of language and content. Heavily weighted toward British upper class sensibility. The quality of writing is excellent but certainly not representative of the diverse background of experiences.

Overall an excellent selection and fine reading. Only a couple of “clinkers” but that was as much me as weakness in the stories.

Few Good Stories
There are a few good stories but most of them are meh. This is similar to the other three sets. The narration is good but stories are lackluster.

extremely interesting short stories
Bronson Pinchot reads a few of them and is amazing. All the pieces are worth listening to and most have surprise endings

Interesting but not as good as number I
Most stories deal now with end of life or melancholy, still a good variety though.
