Publisher's Summary

News travels fast in the small state of Vermont. In this tight-knit society, police officers and investigators proudly maintain a kinship that transcends the boundaries of their jurisdictions. When an unidentified body is found in the peaceful town of Brattleboro, local police and the Vermont Bureau of Investigation both appear at the scene.

But before investigator Joe Gunther can begin to gather evidence of murder, a family emergency sends him to his hometown, where the lives of his mother and brother have suddenly been threatened. Gunther reaches out to a network of police officers who know him only by name and reputation as he attempts to discover the source of this imminent danger.

Meanwhile, his investigative team chases an elusive murderer who has no apparent ties to the victim. In a state that is more like a neighborhood community, secrets are difficult to keep, and it's sometimes impossible to know who can be trusted. To save those he holds closest to his heart, Gunther soon finds himself opposing criminals more menacing than any he has ever encountered.

Joe Gunter Mysteries series a favorite

Tom Taylorson is perfect as narrator author Archer Mayor’s series. Again, this one was in the Audible Plus catalogue at no cost. I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful thriller. A plot with subplots, mumps and downs, surprises and twisty turns make for an enjoyable listen. Highly recommended.

Just ok

Thankfully this was narrated by Tom Taylorson. I can't listen to the others. I'm not thrilled with the addition of slightly sexual scenes. They add nothing and cheapen the book. This was not my favorite story. Digital chats are one of the things I want to get away from and reading is an escape. Finding it in the story was a disappointment. I do enjoy this series and will try another.

wow! Full of action and mystery

As always, another excellent book on this fantastic series. I cannot get enough of Joe Gunther! Tom Taylorson is what really brings Archer Mayor's story alive! Sad the see the next several books are by other narrators. This one has so much going on, never a dull moment.

Joe Gunther Bk 18

I was new to Joe Gunther mysteries //Archer Mayor and began listening with book 1. I was captivated by the character building of all the individuals in the series. I almost feel like I know each of their doppelgangers in my own life. As I was saying I began with book 1 and became so entrenched in the Joe Gunther mysteries I binged listened to all 32 books with fascination, escape, and enjoyment. I love the less than perfect characters, the thought processes each character manipulates and how each struggle with mental demons (some more than others) that make them real and come to life. I am also really impressed that not one of Mr Mayor’s stories (of all 32 books) repeat themselves in story line which is a impressive feat. My only disappointment is the next book isn’t out until Sept 2022.

Not a great plot

I have listened to 18 of the Joe Gunther series. I have enjoyed each one. Chat is the first one that the plots seem unrealistic, but still a fun listen.

I would like to go back to Joe Gunther as the story’s narrator.

Welcome back, Tom Taylorson!

The story is a good one. Tom brings the story alive with his many voices for the characters. Thank you for a great story and a great narrator.

Very good storytelling

This Gunther saga stays close to home, in the best way, with a tight narrative that avoids over-the-top, wide-screen cinematic villainy and implausible plot lines. The narrator does a very good job of differentiating characters and adding appropriate emotional tone.

Love this narration.

Will have to skip ahead a few books until Tom T is back in the narrator chair. Cannot listen to the new voice that follows. Not up to standard and not what I am used to the characters sounding.

?

Just the same. Easy listen. Not taxing. Nothing offensive, nothing wrong with the series. A palate cleanser between meatier books or books I’ve really enjoyed and want to stay with me for a while.
