An Excellent Short Story

4.5 out of 5 stars

There is something about a short story that I just love. Especially when that short story is part of a bigger series. And even more when that series is part of Kindle Unlimited and/or Audible plus. When I saw that Jess Lourey had written a book in this series, I knew I would have to take the dive. Even just looking at the cover drew me in. But once I started it, being a short story – there was no time to hide. Lourey had to start the book fast and definitely did.

I’ve read three books from Lourey, and even in this short story, I couldn’t predict where it would go. She has this way of writing where it feels like anyone could have done it. And every time there is a “reveal,” it just feels like it’s a trick or something else. Catch Her In A Lie was no different. Sure, there were fewer people to suspect, but even when things were being revealed, I was like, “but, is it this person, really?”

Now, I did open this by saying that I love short stories since there’s no place to hide the bad form or a bad premise. But, I will add that I would have loved to read a full-length Catch Her In A Lie, but it would have been a very difficult book to get through (similar to the other Lourey stories). She can write about despicable human beings and despicable things happening to innocent people so it’s almost visceral when reading it.

Overall, a great short story that is easily finished in one sitting. Carly Robbins performed this perfectly and was a great cast for both women in the story.

I liked this one!

This book was pretty good. The characters were likable and the story kept me drawn in. I did find myself wanting more tho and I would love to see a series with the detectives from this book. Overall 4.5 out of 5 stars!

Great listen

This was a good listen for a murder mystery and the ending was what I was expecting for the way it was headed

Get past the narrator and its a good quick story

I really enjoyed the story and the way it was told, that being said I did not like the narrator. The voice was all wrong and if it was a longer story, I would have stopped listening. Her voice is just harsh and did not resonate well with the story being told.
If you can get past the narrator though, it is worth a listen.

great way to satisfy the reader about what really happened on another story and leaves open other avenues for the writer and reader to explore. love it

Great Start to a New Series

A fast paced introduction to a new series. After reading The Quarry Girls, I had high expectations and was not disappointed, not even a little bit. I’m looking forward to getting to know Van Reed better. Ms Lourey is a fantastic storyteller. Bring on book 1!

Lots of mystery in a small package.

A twisty plot and interesting characters make for a great quick listen! There’s a whole bunch of story in this little package. I enjoyed this audiobook and am looking forward to the next in the series.

*deep, uninterrupted sleep

my only complaint is that she missed an important adjective at the end. otherwise, the story was very entertaining.
beware: this story does mention suicide and child molestation.

Not quite a 4*

The book was reasonably well written with a fairly well developed main character. Probably due to the short story format, secondary characters were pretty shallow and not fully revealed until the final twist. The narration, in my opinion was only fair- the reader was breathy, did not really maintain a serious or adult tone - she would have been perfect for children's books. I like Jess Lourey as an author, but this was not her best work.

Mysterious Thriller - Pleasing Ending

This was a very interesting super short thriller that still felt long, feels complete, and came full circle. The story jumps back & forth from two perspectives and we are given detail by detail throughout, so the who dun it mystery does not come together until you have all the information in the very end in an Aha! moment. There were so many details and facets to this short story that I am going to re-listen to see what new details I catch the second time around. Though the content is triggering (pedophiles & child sexual abuse) the concept is tastefully covered (not into specific details thank goodness). The story comes full circle in the end and is actually really satisfying. I felt a sense of justice afterwards.
