Publisher's summary

A witch's destiny denied.

Fate made Trixie a hunter of devilish demons, except demons aren't devilish, and Trixie's not hunting them. She gave that future the boot. But by denying her supposed destiny, she inherits a problem. Furred, feathered, and scaled, the creatures have invaded her life. She's being pranked by furry fairies, stalked by mini-devils, and harassed by the messy scourge of dragons roosting in her yard.

Trixie's had enough. She's moving to Boise and hoping to leave the magical critters behind. But what happens when moving isn't enough? And worse, when her creature problems intersect with a murder investigation?

Join Trixie as she begins her new job as a barista at Magic Beans coffee shop and becomes a reluctant solver of magical creature problems and a consultant for the International Criminal Witch police.

Engaging New Series, Magic Abounds

After recently discovering Night Shift Witch also written by Cate Lawley I was impressed and quickly wanted to explore her other series. I was delighted to discover I enjoyed this story even more. I listen to a lot of paranormal cozy mysteries and have come to set my expectations pretty low for these light short listens but wow Cate continues to surprise me with her concise, engaging, immersive stories. I am smitten with Trixie, a unique witch who is just understanding some budding powers in a new home as she reunites with Sylvester a daemon/demon who works with the magical investigation on a murder case that happened in the area. The way magic is explained and explored in this story felt fresh and fun, the twists and turns of the mystery were actually exciting to try and follow instead of obvious and formulaic, the flirtations between Trixie and Sylvester were enjoyable and not tired and forced. I loved the use of humor and again for how short a story was so impressed with how fleshed out this felt. I saw the second installment in the series won't be releasing until October 2022 which I will eagerly await and in the meantime am now working my way through the other books Cate has put out. So glad to discover a new refreshing voice in this genre that provides a satisfying story with interesting twists on the world of magic and are not shy on humor.
