Captain Shaen Morris may be certifiably insane. Her ship the Belle Starr may look like a rusty, lobster-shaped piece of junk. But for the right price, they'll get you off-world, using the interdimensional portal known as "the Passage". When a robot shows up with some unusual cargo, Shaen questions its motivations. When it refuses to power down during transit, she questions whether the fare is worth it. Something lurking in limbo endangers them all, and it takes some fancy flying to get everyone out alive.

Story
In this science fiction satire of westerns, after the American West was destroyed in a series of biological disasters, rebuilding it is a lot like building it in the first place, but there are crucial differences. For example, new, partly mechanical cattle with computer brains are called steerites. They speak and sing a lot more than the original steers. Most of the cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen are partly mechanical, too, except for those few humans called control-naturals. That group has to keep all their original equipment, just like the original cowboys.

Very interesting
I went into this book blind and was honestly hooked until the end quarter where I feel the book collapses a little. the first three quarters are full of genuinely fascinating world building. I do feel, however, that the explanations provided towards the end of the book were disappointing.
overall I would recommend this book
