An Engaging But Violent Wilderness Outdoor Mystery

Ok so to be honest I was surprised by the level of violence in this entry in the Cork O'Connor Series. Krueger really makes his villains evil--so prepare yourself for some nasty dealings. I know that the contrast is needed to show just what a great guy Cork is--but really some parts were over the top. I have to say up front that my favorite aspect of this series is when Cork's family and neighbors all take more central roles. I also think that the author writes of native American folklore and the wild beauty of Minnesota perfectly.

To my mind there were a few boggy spots involving the plot as the story progressed. I also found myself stuck with about 3 hours to go in the book and couldn't move forward. Maybe it was all the destruction and violence? Not sure, but I had to take a break. I went off and listened to Hillbilly Elegy (eyeopening and harrowing) and Louise Penny's The Long Road Home (really soggy and ultra slow). I found that when I returned to finish Boundary Waters I had a renewed interest and in the end all was not lost.

I will continue with the series and try the next book. Do be aware that if violence disturbs you this book might just be too much. I hope that the balance found in the first book of the series, which I really enjoyed, returns. Recommended with reservations.

good second book in the series

The second book in the Cork O'Connor series by William Kent Krueger. Listening to the book while sitting here in July with the sweltering desert heat of Arizona, the setting along the Minnesota/Canada border in late October with cold rain, wind, snow, icy cold lake and river water, and I'm sure a spectacular beauty seemed very enticing.

For the story itself, the author has created a protagonist you can't help but like. Part Native American, ever resourceful, driven to do the right thing, Cork is developing into the kind of character you like and respect along with the other characters in the series. Since there are more books in the series you knew in the end it would all turn out well. Still, there was suspense to the story as it unfolded. I know I went through the book in short order, always wanting to get right back to it. And, I'll look forward to the third book in the series.

Another great mystery

I enjoyed this book greatly. I will be listening to both the first and third books in the trilogy. One complaint: the narrator REALLY needs to work on southern accents. The guy who is supposed to be from Arkansas sounds like he is from over around northern Florida and may have early throat cancer. A true Ozarkian accent or even Cajun flavor would have made this key character more believable. ITs really not that difficult.

I so much enjoyed Boundary Waters, that I may go back and read it again in a couple of years. SO GOOD!!!

My Second Favorite Mystery Author

I love Craigslist Johnson's Longmire Series and have for some time been looking for another author in a similar vein. This author is the one so now I have a Second Favorite Mystery Author to follow. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I enjoy this series and have been excited to read each book to see what happens next. This one kept me on the edge of my seat and I could not turn it off until I had finished.

So far I am really enjoying this series. I love Cork O'Conner. I do not like Jo, his estranged wife. Cork put her through law school. He allowed her sister to move in when his first child was born and she has lived with them since then. Cork supported her too. He supported Jo while she built her law practice. Then what does Jo do? She has an affair (unknown to Cork). At this time Cork was very despondent because he had lost his job as sheriff due to an incident in a standoff with a man with gun (who shot Cork's best friend and mentor). Cork has no clue that Jo is cheating on him. He is sad and has lost his identity. Jo continues with her affair and then asks Cork to leave his home - the home he grew up in with his parents - the home he brought her to after they married along with her sister and Cork and Jo's children. Cork thought he was the bad guy in the marriage and left the house to go live in the back room of a trailer. Now isn't Jo horrible!!! After Jo throws Cork out of his house he begins a relationship with Molly and falls in love with her. She loves him too and it is an intense relationship. Molly dies at the end of the first book. The town people know about Cork and Molly after she dies (is killed) and now they look down on Cork as an irresponsible man who abandoned his family. Jo's relationship with the other man has ended when he is killed because he is a sleazy murdering creep (he killled Molly and some other people). Town people don't ever find out about Jo's affair - Cork did not spill the beans. Everyone blames Cork. I just can't find it in my heart to forgive Jo The author is trying to rehabilitate her in this second book - but so far it hasn't worked for me.The story in this book is very intense. Shiloh, a country and western singer is the child of a native American woman from Aurora (Cork's home town). She is missing up in the wilderness to the north of Aurora. People are out to kill her and they are ruthless killers without mercy. Cork, Shiiloh's father, and an ex con native American and his ten year old son, join up with some FBI agents (maybe?) to try to find her. People are being killed right and left. It is difficult to figure out who and why. Cork is smart but he is not a super hero with uncanny fighting skills - he is much more of a normal man that knows human nature. He is also a determined person and when he decided to do something - he does it. This is a very thrilling story and the narrator is excellent. He tells the story very well and does not get in the way. He is outstanding in his reading/pronunciation of native American language. I really did like this book even better than the first book in the series. I plan to download book number three and continue the saga of Cork O'Conner.
