Publisher's summary

"If you’re timid when you should be tough and resigned when you should be resolute, this book is the antidote. Drawing on her own life story along with a stack of research, Dr. Luana Marques will help you break free from limiting patterns and create a life of meaning and purpose.”—Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestseller author of Drive, When, and The Power of Regret

Turn your anxiety into strength with Harvard-based psychotherapist Dr. Luana Marques’ 3-step method to living boldly—her clinically-proven approach inspires her clients from CEOs to at-risk teens and echoes lessons learned growing up in challenging circumstances in Brazil.

Bold Move is Harvard-based psychotherapist Dr. Luana Marques’ unique, tried and tested method to get you out of your rut and give you the courage to create a more confident and meaningful life. Dr. Luana pinpoints the anxiety at the root of avoidance and shows you how to overcome it and achieve your goals.

Dr. Luana understands anxiety. After decades of research, teaching, and clinical practice, she realized that the coping techniques she learned from her mother and grandmother while growing up in challenging circumstances in Brazil mimicked science-based CBT therapy. Now, she has synthesized that knowledge, developing a 3-step path that works for everyone—from teens in crisis to executives experiencing burnout.

Bold Move includes concrete examples and exercises backed by the most recent clinical and scientific research. Dr. Luana’s 3-step plan:

· Helps you recognize thinking patterns that leave you feeling tense, anxious, and worried

· Outlines the many forms that avoidance can take

· Explains the importance of being your own “thought lawyer”

· Shows you why “just do it” doesn’t get it done.

· Strategizes how you can build on your values to establish boundaries and make room for your dreams

A blend of Unwinding Anxiety, Don’t Believe Everything You Think, and Do Hard Things, Bold Move is a groundbreaking, transformative program that works for everyone. This book will be invaluable for people looking to jumpstart their dreams and for clinicians working with a diverse client community.

Bold Move: Psychology Tools for All

As a psychologist and a Ph.D. student, I found "Bold Move: A 3-Step Plan to Transform Anxiety into Power" by Dr. Luana Marques to be profoundly insightful. This book's real strength lies in its universal appeal - it serves as an enlightening guide for everyone, not just academics, who are interested in learning the tools to manage anxiety, stress, anger, and other aspects of psychological avoidance.

Dr. Marques, a renowned Harvard professor, brilliantly demystifies complex concepts from psychology and neuroscience, making them accessible to all. Her blend of professional and personal experiences offers an invaluable combination of knowledge and relatability.

I found the audiobook version particularly engaging, thanks to Dr. Marques's dynamic narration. I am now eager to delve into the printed copy. Whether you're an experienced mental health professional or a curious newcomer to the subject, "Bold Move" is an indispensable addition to your library. Step into this insightful book and gain a fresh understanding of what it means to be bold.

Transformative, Inspiring, Empowering

This book is a game-changer for me. Luana Marques - I want you to know that Bold Move has given me the tools to leave a job that, while aligned with commitment to providing legal services to low-income and no-income individuals with psychiatric disabilities, was simultaneously misaligned with my desire to work in, and contribute to, an organization that is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and supportive work environment. For the last 2-3 years, I invested countless hours and emotional energy trying to change the organizational culture and persuade senior management to be more transparent and humane - to incorporate trauma-informed into its management and HR policies, practices and procedures. I failed at every juncture and, worse, it affected my energy and ability to be present, joyful, and generous in my personal relationships and I lost my resilience. I have a bold vision now, as a result of listening to this book and engaging in the writing exercises. I have a calm heart and a clear mind. I feel capable of approaching and tolerating the fear and discomfort of the major transformations needed to live boldly, to live a life that aligns with my values. My bold vision begins with resigning from my job, which I am doing today.

Review from a Psychologist

I absolutely loved this book. I have a foundation in CBT but the way that Dr. Marques explains it is exceptional. Additionally, she weaves client and personal stories into the book in such a way that is seamless and elegant, and continuously engaging. A wonderful book - I will be recommending it to my clients.

Great ideas and intentions, moderate delivery

There is no lack of enthusiasm for a good cognitive challenge here. Luana is being helpful, and candid, and warm. However, it falls short of invigorating or inspiring in the way these uncomfortable tasks for growth require. Love the author, appreciate the book, but wish I had felt more powerful calls to action.
