Publisher's Summary

At 27, magician Natalie Webb is already a has-been. A card-trick prodigy, she started touring at 17, took first place at the World of Magic competition at 18, and never reached such heights again. Shunned by the magic world after a disastrous liaison with an older magician, she now lives alone with her pigeons and a pile of overdue bills in a New Jersey apartment. In a desperate ploy to make extra cash, she follows up on an old offer to write a feature magazine article - on the art of cheating at cards.

But when she meets the perfect subject for her article, what begins as a journalistic gamble brings into question everything Natalie thinks she knows about her talent, and herself. Natalie is dazzled by the poker cheat's sleight of hand and soon finds herself facing a proposition that could radically alter her fortune - to help pull off a $1.5 million magic trick that, if done successfully, no one will ever even suspect happened.

With Kardos raising the stakes chapter after chapter, Bluff is a breathtaking work of suspense from a writer at the top of his game.

Hell of a story! Easily worth 11 stars!

This one blows my mind! With his novel Bluff released this week author Michael Kardos has written a very special suspense mystery. No matter your genre of choice, you need to get and listen to this wild tale of deceit and retribution. Julia Whelan's narration is perfect for this book.

I can't say enough about this book!

I enjoyed Michael Kardos Before He Finds Her (2015) and gave that book five stars. When I saw this new release this morning I knew this was my next book. I couldn't be happier with it than I am. This is Excellent!

The book begins with the protagonist Natalie Webb putting on a magic show for a group of attorneys. When a card trick goes awry she gets angry at the audience participant she expertly throws a card at the man catching him in the eye. The magic community wants nothing to do with her. In need of money for everyday living she agrees to do an article for a magazine that compares a card cheats skills with playing cards to that of a magician. That's when she meets Ellen and her life changes forever.
Oh, I wish I could say more, but I won't. This is such a GREAT story. I could not stop listening, I was literally hanging on every word. This book has friendship, betrayal, masterful manipulation, lots of money and even more suspense!
Julia Whelan's narration is superb. This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!

Beyond Great Expectations

So many twists and turns with characters great and small but in the end Natalie is the smartest of them all. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Well-crafted and Engrossing

If you could sum up Bluff in three words, what would they be?

Tight, Engrossing, Well-crafted

What other book might you compare Bluff to and why?

A Gambler's Anatomy by Jonathan Lethem. Both are tightly written and rich in detail... they also both pull you into a compelling world you may not have known existed.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

Perfect reader for a first-person story about a young, washed-up magician.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Sometimes you don't have to play the cards your dealt.

Any additional comments?

I’ve seen a few reviewers write that Michael Kardos’s BLUFF — a book about a sleight-of-hand magician who gets sucked into the world of card sharps — is itself a magic trick. And on one hand, I totally get that: it draws you in with a fun premise, hooks you with sharp writing, then dazzles with surprises and twists and compelling characters. It’s like the best parts of Ocean’s Eleven meets one of those Ricky Jay card-trick videos. But I don’t think it’s magic. I think that, much like the narrator’s impressive skills with a deck of cards, this book is the product of a LOT of work. The characters are all well crafted and their backstories are never obvious or boring; the plot pulls the reader through like the best magician patter you ever heard; and the writing itself is smart without being off-putting.

And sure, I’m a sucker for heist and caper stories, but I LOVED this book. I’m definitely gonna check out the rest of Kardos’s work!

Be prepared for a wild ride!

Riveting! Don't miss this amazing audiobook! When you first meet Natalie Webb performing her sleight of hand magic show to a group of drunk attorneys, you have to feel sorry for the poor girl. She's working her routine masterfully but then gets stuck with a complete jerk of a volunteer intent on ruining her act. As her temper rises I wanted to shout "Let it go Natalie, let it go!" But of course she doesn't and so begins a journey of unsurmountable TROUBLE, with her temper at the crux. I'm not kidding, TROUBLE. Natalie is hit from all sides and you will love having a front row seat. But beware - the last hour will leave you speechless. It's shocking! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

No Bluff -- This Book Was Outstanding!

Julia Whelan is one of my favorite narrators and, quite frankly, I could listen to her read the phonebook. And when Julia Whelan reads a book with an incredible plot and superb character development........the book is always impossible to put down. A case in point: I listened to this book in one day.. If I could give it 10 stars, I would do so.

In the beginning, this book seemed like it was a combo of "Molly's Game"( a true story about a woman who made many wrong moves while organizing/hosting poker games) and "The Magician's Lie" (a fictional account about a magician who kills her husband while performing). After the first few chapters, however, it was evident that this book wasn't anything like those two books and really took on a storyline of its own.

I am unable to comment on my favorite parts of this book because I do not want to reveal any spoilers.

I just listened to 4 dud books, so it was very refreshing to listen to a book that was truly extraordinary. I have read two other Michael Kardos books and this was definitely his best one yet.

I highly recommend this book.

Great

This was one of the best books of mystery, thriller I have ever read. It becomes very fast paced, my heart beating faster by the second. I will recommend this book highly. I think it would be a fantastic movie but may be difficult to show the fast pace con, close-up magician and all! You will enjoy this one. I can only hope this writer continues to write books as great as this one. I will follow with that hope.

Kudos to Michael Kardos

My 2nd book by Kardos and a fun listen. I’m a fan. It ended with a very good unexpected twist. I look forward to more of his books. The narrator, Julie Whelan, has a great voice.
