The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger. DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

Too many characters
I enjoyed all of the books prior to this one. There were too many forgettable characters to try and keep track of, and the espionage-ish angle was not interesting, at least to me. I hope the next one is more serial killer-ish.

I'm bored by Russia's oligarchs, politics, mafia and military. Of course that's what this book is. Rather than learn anything from the author's ideas on the creep of Russia into England's culture I slid through as if I were sitting in the coach's history class back in high school.
Just as it was ending I thought of all the Trump chatter on Russia. Then I thought of the woman , divorced from a Siberian Colonel, a mail order bride who came here, married my neighbor then disappeared into America....and my friend's high school son who did so well in his
Russian language classes he was
reruited by our military before he
graduated.... I'm gonna listen to
this again. :-)

One burning question
The story and narration are both OK (4/5), but I was greatly distracted by the question of the disappearing cat. Why bring it into the story at all, if it will later simply disappear through the window especially opened (one assumes) for this reason? Every time Caslin came home all I could focus on was, what about the cat? I even listened to the next book immediately to see if it would reappear but unlike his grumpy father and his faithful assistants, the cat has disappeared.
So if like me you are worried about the cat, we can only hope that a future book or even a spin-off series will solve the mystery of the Missing Cat of York.

Nate Caslin is back!
Although this is still a very good book, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous 3 in the series. I found the storyline to be quite complicated, and I got lost once or twice. This may have been because I listened to the book during the coronavirus lockdown and I have been finding it hard to concentrate.
However, it was nice to catch up with Nate and his team and I look forward to listening to the next in the series.

I really enjoy reading and listening to these books by JM Dalgliesh. They are written so well, you could imagine it all being true. Caslin and his team are believable, well rounded characters. The stories pull you in and spit you out at the end. Can't wait to get stuck in to the next installment.
