Publisher's Summary

An irresponsible twentysomething comic and his equally shameless grandmother join forces as proud pariahs in this dark and rowdy story of dicey family ties, kindred spirits, bad behavior, and bribery.

When Rory’s judgmental mother told him that he took after his grandma Evelyn, he took it as a compliment. The ninety-two-year-old cocktail-toting, offtrack-betting party girl was every bit the troublemaker he was. When she landed at a dead-end nursing home, Rory jumped at the chance to liven things up for bored Evelyn - with vodka, scratch-offs, bingo, and gaming. But even in this modest assisted-living casino, the risk of betrayal was a gamble.

Rory Scholl’s Black Sheep is part of This Can’t Be Happening, a collection of four true stories about making the best of a worst-case scenario curated by Kevin Allison, creator of the hit true storytelling podcast RISK! Outrageous, alarming, triumphant, and sometimes embarrassing, these fearless confessionals can be read, or listened to, in one what-on-earth-would-I-do? sitting.

Meh.

Unremarkable story, no surprises, snarky narrator/author. This doesn't bode well for the future of the series.

Almost incomprehensibly bad

A poorly written and presumably autobiographical story about a pitiful loser who lazily careens through life making unfunny jokes while pounding himself on the back. I have no clue how this fits into a This Can't Be Happening theme.

Terrible terrible

Story about a smart mouth kid who obviously has zero social awareness and a clear disregard for any authority. Don’t waste your time.

Just not my cup of tea

I just do not want to listen to someone who doesn't have any respect for others

Funny & Entertaining

Irresponsible man-child uses grandma to party

I was hoping for a short, sit-com style story, about seizing the day, defying one’s age, or bonding with family. Instead, it was just a guy who finds his latest drinking buddy in his grandma. They enable each other’s irresponsibility as he looks down on the responsible folks in his world. His biting sarcasm was more off-putting than funny. Okay for a short, free listen, but in the end unremarkable.

Not Your Run of the Mill Grandmas

Even though I have lived with two sets of hopeless alcoholics, I enjoyed the fun of Rory’s Creative Grandmother/Grandson relationship! It is an uplifting catharsis experience!

Could be any grandma!

I listened to this while floating around in the pool and really enjoyed it. Well my mother was in a nursing home I wish I would’ve thought of this because I know she would’ve enjoyed it. She would’ve enjoyed the scratch tickets and the screwdrivers.

Really enjoyed it

Relatively simple story but has depth and spirit. Great telling, I think I prefer to hear rather than read it.
