Publisher's Summary

Kamau and Melissa’s love was real. But so was her grandfather’s prejudice. In this funny, moving essay, W. Kamau Bell, the host of CNN’s United Shades of America, shares his very personal story of culture clash, family tradition, and racial bias.

When the black comedian first meets the beloved Sicilian grandfather of his Italian American girlfriend, Melissa, the wrong sparks fly. The most important member of her large family shuns Kamau. What follows is a bracing, true account of conflict and patience, in-laws and family heirlooms, as Melissa and Kamau deal with cold shoulders, rejection, and finally resolution.

Everybody Loves Kamau! is part of The Real Thing, a collection of moving, hilarious, and big-hearted essays on the modern realities of friendship, romance, commitment, and love. Each story can be listened to in a single sitting.

I DO love Kamau!

I love Kamau! And I think everybody will too after listening to him! I don’t know why you wouldn’t; Kamau shows how he is not only funny but kind and thoughtful. In addition, he is a wonderful family man always putting his wife before himself and always thinking of his children. I see why everyone loves Kamau!

SO worth your time!

I really like Kamau Bell from his show on CNN. To hear his real, and somehow also very funny at times, experience with being accepted into his wife’s family was fantastic. I feel that this is a one-off, I will look to see if there are more episodes, but if not, this should be a series.

Success!

It can be difficult to get many moving parts in a short book. Mr. Bell did a phenomenal job of allowing us to respectfully get to know him and his family. It felt genuine and gentle to the spirit of all involved.

I enjoyed listening to Kamau!

I was already familiar with this “cool brother comedian”. His humor has a great flair for speaking truth to power. You can laugh and learn. I also knew he was in a mixed race relationship. But to hear the story of how his wife’s grandfather finally came to accept him shows why Kamau’s CNN show was so good.

W Kamau Bell is Brilliant

Kamau tells a story that is entertaining and captivating. so much so that you don't realize until after that you've learned more that you could have imagined about race, gender difference, and cultural variants.

He's a gifted storyteller.

Funny guy

Kamala, I watched every one of your United Shades of America shows—until you made just too many derogatory remarks about conservatives.

In this performance, you denigrate Fox news. I ask you to consider this: MSNBC, CNN, etc, have opinions sprinkled throughout all their news programs; there’s no escaping them. Fox news has separate news and opinion shoes; if you don’t want to hear their opinions, just watch the straight news shows. Maybe that’s why they’re outperforming, by FAR, the other networks.

His telling about meeting his current wife and her grandfather (the center of this story) is very entertaining. He has a funny way of turning a phrase. Thoroughly enjoyable.

It was okay

I feel like the author was trying too hard. The jokes were mid, the story was just okay. The story line had family dynamic that is appropriate to discuss with his own family and children. It was not insightful enough, no real depth. Flaccid all around. If you want to speak on an “Off topic” I need the author to do it with firm conviction.

A hysterically funny book

This book kept me laughing from beginning to end and it was all true. A light read worth listening to.
