Publisher's summary

Narrated by Josh Peck

A wonderfully candid memoir from one of the most recognizable faces of a generation, actor, writer, Youtuber, and television superstar, Josh Peck. In his warm and inspiring book, Josh reflects on the many stumbles and silver linings of his life and traces a zigzagging path to redemption. Written with such impressive detail and aching honesty, Happy People are Annoying is full of surprising life lessons for anyone seeking to accept their past and make peace with the complicated face in the mirror.

Josh Peck rose to near-instant fame when he starred for four seasons as the comedic center of Nickelodeon’s hit show Drake & Josh. However, while he tried to maintain his role as the funniest, happiest kid in every room, Josh struggled alone with the kind of rising anger and plummeting confidence that quietly took over his life.

For the first time, Josh reflects on his late teens and early twenties. Raised by a single mother, and coming of age under a spotlight that could be both invigorating and cruel, Josh filled the cratering hole in his self-worth with copious amounts of food, television, drugs, and all of the other trappings of young stardom. Until he realized the only person standing in his way...was himself. Today, with a string of lead roles on hit television shows and movies, and one of the most enviable and dedicated fanbases on the internet, Josh Peck is more than happy, he’s finally, enthusiastically content.

Happy People are Annoying is the culmination of years of learning, growing, and finding bright spots in the scary parts of life. Written with the kind of humor, strength of character, and unwavering self-awareness only someone who has mastered their ego can muster, this memoir reminds us of the life-changing freedom on the other side of acceptance.

Meh

Too many F bombs for us. We didn’t get that far into the book before we decided we heard enough.

This book is my new best friend

Just finished listening and I’m sitting here wishing I could experience this book again for the first time. The telling of the story felt so comfortable and friendly, like Josh was an old pal in a coffee shop telling me what he’d been up to, but was also packed with poignant and vulnerable and beautiful lessons that changed me and will stick with me forever. I laughed, I cried, and I learned. I wish I could thank Josh for writing this and sharing it with the world. Now excuse me while I go rewatch everything he’s ever worked on and recommend this book to everyone I meet.

I thought I knew JP..

..but after listening to Josh read his book, I realized I only know him from Drake and Josh and nothing after. This book opened my eyes to the struggles he faced as a relentlessly human individual. I feel I have a new perspective on life and loved hearing JP's side of the story from his own mouth. Great book, very down to earth and real.

ADDICTING

I wasn’t exactly sucked in the moment I began this memoir, but it happened before I knew it was happening. Suddenly, the combination of Peck’s genuine performance of his all too real story and the absurd details of his stardom had me physically shaking. I had shivers in my spine at two points! I almost cried (three times!) while listening to this at work. I’ve been looking forward to this memoir since pre-orders started and I’m so glad to have picked it up. Josh Peck is a champion for revealing his dirtiest truths and not trying to veil them with humor. Yes, he’s funny, but aware that trying to be funny to cover the grime wouldn’t work, especially on an audience who can sympathize with many of his experiences. The book’s title can be misleading (I initially thought it was going to be a silly read about his various Tweets, etc.) so I was slammed by the bold-faced events portrayed here. Definitely worth the pick up.

Underrated!

I was not very similar with Josh Peck before listening to this book, but I had just finished Jennette McCurdy’s book and this was suggested to me. I had seen Drake and Josh as a kid/young teen but that’s about it. I did not expect this to be such an incredible book. An absolute must read especially for any creatives trying to survive in our culture. His perspectives on his own upbringing and parenting are very relatable to those raised by single parents. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone and it made me a huge fan!

A side of Josh I would have never know

Overall the book was an easy listen, finished it in a plane ride home haha. Like most I grew up watching Josh. I always wondered what happened to him after “Drake & Josh” and how he ended up with a YouTube career. Two years ago, I discovered him on YouTube and it brought back that “home” feeling when you see a familiar face.
I throughly enjoyed this book and I’m glad Josh decided to release it!!

Good job!

I was born outside of the “Drake and Josh” phenomenon. Too old for the show and no children to introduce me to the characters. Actually, I purchased the book due to it’s title. (Never underestimate a good title, and yes, I often find overly happy people annoying.)
What I discovered is a memoir that was self-reflective without becoming egotistical, snarky with an upbeat ending. Good job.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable.

This book had some great stories. Struggles and joy, ups and downs and was very well written. I literally never lost focus throughout the entire book. I was immersed the entire time.

Great writing, and very personal, which made it super relatable. Thanks, Josh. You pulled at all the heart strings.

Also, I didn’t know you had a book until you were on The Genius Life podcast, so I’ll send a thank you to Max as well 😂 looking forward to hearing about your wood ranch adventures, also looking forward to another book someday!

JP

I ended up listening to this book read by you, and I guessed it, the author, Josh Peck. I am in my 30s and grew up watching Jake and Josh, and I watch a lot of movies, so I've seen all of Josh's movies and TV shows. This book was incredibly great, it was funny, sad and I was able to relate to many things that Josh has been through mainly having a single mom and a dad that doesn't really matter and being a recovering addict. I will listen again when I need to hear a friend's voice in my ear. It is a short read/listen, and I highly recommend it.

A Profound Look Inwards

Happy People Are Annoying is packed full of interesting stories and nuggets of wisdom that feel valuable and worth the listen. Josh Peck goes through his entire life, laying bare his insecurities, highs and lows, and it mostly feels very honest and occasionally profound. He has a genuine ability to assess his inner most struggles and reconstruct them in a way I've rarely seen before. I related to many of the personal problems he identified with his own behaviour and the sometimes unhelpful ways he views himself. Over the course of the book, he overcomes considerable adversities and finds a way to present his solutions in a way that I could digest easily. If you've struggled with issues of ego or self-doubt, you may find something in here that will genuinely help you improve your outlook.

Peck's delivery of the material is great and had me cracking up at moments I didn't expect to. I think it elevates an already fun read into something very enjoyable.

My only criticism with the book is how little time is spent on Drake and Josh, which is basically nothing. This is what most people know him for, myself included, so for this life-changing experience that elevated him to household name to be glossed over... feels like a mistake. Josh handwaves this oddity by saying that Drake Bell and him weren't all that close and that the experience of making the show didn't really effect him all that much, and there's not a part of me who believes this. It comes off more as Josh wanting to put distance between him and Bell for understandable reasons, but it feels dishonest to revise history like this. I wanted to hear what it was like going from a relatively unknown, struggling young performer to having their own show. I wanted to hear how the pressures of that effected him and how he handled that. I wanted to hear about his relationship with the cast and crew, maybe even some anecdotes of him adapting to the trappings of a sitcom. We get none of this. If you wanted to hear about the main thing this man is known for, you won't get it here in this book about his life, which is very strange. It's the only element of this book that feels dishonest and it's especially noticeable when contrasted with how raw the rest of it is.

An entertaining and inspiring insight into Josh’s fascinating journey.

Josh’s storytelling ability is entertaining, honest, and heartfelt. I enjoyed every chapter of this book, as he uncovers so much I would have never guessed about his life. He doesn’t hold back and tells it like it is (or was) every step of the way. He shares some fascinating inside info on what it’s like to navigate through Hollywood, while documenting his internal journey in the most honest way possible. 10/10 for an entertaining read!

Great book, great narration, overall - great

Really enjoyed this book, as a fan of Josh’s starting with Drake & Josh back in the day and now the good guys pod, it was great to hear all the ins and outs of what happened between the two.
Also really appreciate Josh telling the whole story, it adds that extra bit of character to the audio book.

Couldn’t recommend enough.

Easily addictive.

Much like Josh Pecks life experiences, this book was easily addictive.

The Insight into his life was an eye-opener, from a young Drake and Josh fan it’s so easy to judge a person by their child stardom, rather than the whole path they have taken. I actually found a lot of relativity with this and enjoyed every chapter as much as the last.

Highly recommend and an easy listen

A smack of reality from one of my childhood icons.

In this book Josh goes into detail about his time before and after appearing on Drake and Josh and how drug addiction and how you become your own worst enemy.

His life after Drake and Josh was always a mystery for me as a child, glad this was how I heard about it and not from a news article saying that he's overdosed or arrested.

Finally, the story was interesting and the performance was one of the best for a long time. Glad to See Josh is back on track and doing what he loves with a healthy family and support system.

Congratulations on your sobriety Josh.

Honest, funny and charming. Great book 👌

Met Josh through TV when I was a kid first watching Nickelodeon. Followed him on every platform since because I'm a fan of his humour, not a mega fan, but... a loyal fan.

Great book Josh, it had me thinking about my own life and how I can improve whilst also making me chuckle during my commutes and casual listening around home. Definitely recommend! 👏
