The Transformation of a Victim

Fictional novel that discusses the complex issue of partner abuse. Story brings out the problems that a victim experiences not only at the hands of a violet partner, but also the issues that ensue in the aftermath. Emotional scarring, fear of relocation and discovery, personal safety, and low self esteem are just some of the elements that the main character Joelle experiences. Much the same as actual abuse within society, the author (Marie) does an excellent job of presenting the problem of abuse through giving information within a fictional context . An exceptional method of describing a social economic problem that is often ignored or overlooked within the community and many times responsible for devastating loss. Part of a trilogy and a very worthwhile read. I found myself becoming anxious for Joelle to develop the strength and the necessary self esteem to be released from her role as victim to finding security and contentment in her life. I was given this audio for the purpose of review however, the comments and opinions are my own and were not solicited.

Great Story + Excellent Narration = Fabulous

While this is listed as a Series, its a very loosely connected series and each book is really a stand alone. I listened to the first book in this series and I didn't care for the original narrator, however Riley Raye does an excellent job on this second book in the series and I hope that maybe the author will consider re-recording the first book with Riley doing the narration.
So a Great Story Plus Excellent Narration equals a Fabulous book.
Looking forward to the next installment.

I enjoyed the story

I really wanted to rate this with 4 stars, but as much as I enjoyed the concept of it, I didn't get drawn into story. The characters were good, but I didn't love them. I don't feel I connected or felt their thoughts and pain. Perhaps if the story was longer, the author could have spent more time developing the characters and building suspense. All in all it was pretty good, and I would recommend it.

Because I won’t

Wow! The twists in this book will have me spinning for a while. Joe is such a strong woman to have gone through what she did and when history catches up to her she is beyond strong to meet it head on. I can’t say much without giving away any important spoilers so I will just leave it as amazing and you really want to listen!

another great book in this series

Non-stop action in this second book in the Because Trilogy...I literally lost sleep because I couldn't pause!
Joelle has escaped an abusive relationship and has been 'adopted' by Jake and Carly (read book 1). Over time, and with the help of her new friends, Jo has matured and become a strong woman. She has even begun to develop feelings for quiet and broody private investigator, James. When her ex, Nathan, shows up, will Jo be able to save herself using her self defense moves? There's so much more to the story of Jo, her family and her ex...it will boggle the mind. This story is now classified in my library as a 'can't put down' and 'must relisten'.

Twists and turns

The narration seemed a bit rushed but the overall story was good. I thought I was missing some details but when the plot twists came out it all started coming together.

I thought this was going to be a story about a weak girl who couldn’t bounce back after her tragedy. I was pleasantly surprised. She managed to get her life on track and create a family that she always needed. No spoilers, but the story wrapped up nicely.

Chilling but really good

Joelle (Jo) barely escaped an abusive ex before she was able to run away and start a new life for herself. Now with new friends and a feeling of security, she is ready to stand on her own. But when things from her past start to creep back into her life Jo begins to wonder if she really escaped her past or if it's about to catch up with her.

angst...

This was quite different for me, but engrossing all the same. A definite must listen to. Elaine Marie's writing has depth and just grabs your attention. This was my first book my Riley Raye. All in all, it is not for the faint of heart, but a great story none the less.

A Second Chance at Life and Love

This can be read as a standalone even though it is in a trilogy. Actually, it took me a little bit to realize how Because I Can and Because I Won't were connected. I love stories like these where the main female character is such a strong individual. Because I Won't is a story about overcoming one's past but also a story about discovering love. There are some VERY unexpected twists in this shorter listen that make it super engaging. This author may not write longer stories (yet🤞), but she is able to make these shorter stories pack a punch.

I thought the narrator did a great job in this performance and her voice fit Jo very well. She kept character voices consistent and did a fabulous job bringing out Jo's strength as a female main character.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Friendship and love

A story of the kindness of friends, taking a chance on love and fighting the past. A good story, though I did find myself getting a bit confused at times with the plotlines. Riley Raye narrates well, though her differentiation between male and female voices wasn't always clear. Overall, a reasonably good book and audio.

Edge of my seat!

This book by Elaine Marie too me by surprise. I loved the first book in the series, but this one really caught my attention and I was glued until the end. Joelle is running from an abusive relationship from her college boyfriend Nathan. She settles three states away and is lucky to meet Jake and Carly. Under their wing, she is able to get her life on track and rebuild a new Jo. Making friends over the years and finishing school, Jo finds herself comfortable and attracted to Jimmy, a regular customer at the diner she works in. But should she feel comfortable? Will her past come back to haunt her? And is it how she remembers it? There are several twists and turns in this romantic suspense, sure to catch you off guard and keep you listening til the very end. And you will be surprised! It's a fast paced, thrilling story with steamy romance, one you are sure to enjoy.

Riley Raye gives a commanding performance. I enjoyed her pace and voice throughout the story as she gives each character a lot of emotion. It is easy to tell the characters apart and she creates a feeling of suspense.
