Story
For Ezra Payne and the Stealthy Tiger mercenaries, professionalism is everything. Hired to assist in the bitter, bloody fighting on the planet Hall, they quickly earn a decisive victory for their employer. They settle afterward in for a needed period of rebuilding, and a few months’ peace before moving on to the next contract. But their respite does not last. More mercenaries, hired by the Allied Mercenary Command itself, land on Hall. The year is 2050. The power of magic and the creatures it brings have returned to the earth, and many of the ancient races have re-emerged. Elves, Orks, Mages, and lethal Dragons find a home in a world where mana, technology, and human flesh have melded into deadly urban predators. And the multinational mega-corporations that run the world hoard the only thing of real value - information. Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

Of all the Emperor’s sons who fell to Chaos, it is perhaps Magnus the Red whose tale is the most tragic. Sanctioned because of his desire for knowledge, chastised, judged, and shattered to his very elements – there is much for the Crimson King to feel vengeful for. Yet revenge is not the only thing that draws him to Terra alongside the Warmaster’s besieging armies. He seeks something, a fragment, the missing piece of himself that lies within the most impregnable place on the planet – the inner sanctum of the Imperial Palace.

Publisher's Summary
The epic first novel of the legendary science-fiction series.
Thirty meters tall, 70 tons of quick-striding death and destruction, the armored war machines called BattleMechs are the frontline forces of the crumbling star empire locked in the horror of the endless Succession Wars. Their pilots are MechWarriors, 31st-century knights riding armored machines powerful enough to take a city apart.
Grayson Death Carlyle had been training to be a MechWarrior since he was 10 years old, but his graduation came sooner than expected. With his friends and family dead and his father's regiment destroyed, young Grayson finds himself stranded on a world turned hostile. Now he must learn the hardest lesson of all: It takes more than a BattleMech to make a MechWarrior....
But to claim that title, all Grayson has to do is go out and capture one of those giant killing machines...if it doesn't kill him first.
About BattleTech:
Decision at Thunder Rift is one of the first of more than 90 novels set in the BattleTech universe, a 31st-century setting of constant war between planets, nations, and peoples. A ‘Mech is a 12-meter-tall, 100-ton walking war machine. Only another ‘Mech can face one. Mercenary armies battle for pay, for honor, and for causes innumerable.

I love Battletech! Let me rebuy your books
I own all the battletech books and am introducing my family into the series. PLEASE turn them all into audiobooks so I can purchase them in audiobook format. I use Google Books and use the e-reader function but it lacks the finesse and personality of a human reader. This is a far more enjoyable reading experience and I would buy them all in a heartbeat if they get converted into audiobooks.
Battletech is the best scifi universe of all time.

This was my into to the battletech books
this was the first battletech book I read many years ago. I had played the game but never new about the books till a friend gave me an old copy of this book. the story was great and after reading and collecting the paperback books for years I see this on audible and I was overjoyed and gladly spent my credit to take a trip down memory lane and enjoy this story again. especially seince at this time besides 2 other books all the audible battletech offerings are abridged to the point of unreadability.
this book is a good jumping off point for the battletech universe. it provides the needed introduction to this massive and overlaping set of stories. the only downside is that if you are unfamiliar with the series you will need to google the mechs to get a good picture of what they look like. the paper books had scetches at the back of the book for reference
. if you enjoyed this book and want more you can continue the gray death saga or I recomend the warrior trilogy. the books will overlap with dates and time to build a massive story of war and political intriege. my hope is that autible contiues to release the books in audio form.

Great performance and the story stands up well 25 years later
Great narration with some nice special effects to the voices.
A fun military combat novel involving giant robots. The technology in the book isn’t perhaps as visionary as it should have been. Modern day sensors and guidance systems can go better. Part of the BattleTech story is some lost tech exists in this universe but it should be more capable.
Other than that the story holds up well 25 years later. Good characters and an interesting storyline. Well worth getting.

Best of the BattleTech series I have seen!
There is a lot of the BattleTech fiction that feels dated, campy, or sometimes downright corny - but Decision at Thunder Rift is an EXCELLENT representation of this wonderful universe. It brings to life characters, machines, and a world absolutely worth visiting!

Exactly what I was looking for.
I love this book. Gray Death Legion Saga was in my top 3 favourite book series. I have read it more than 20 times in my native language in past 25 years and it was now great experiece to hear it in original with such a great performance. This book was sole reason for reactivation of my subscription and I am glad I have done it. If this quality of performance is ment as a standard for future books. I can hereby promise that I will buy all of them. Battletech is Rich a great universe and I can recomend it to everyone. This book is great place to start.
