The wrong guy just got the right AI.

In a society where every citizen is given an AI at birth, Cal Bennett is one of the rare few who doesn't have one. These AIs can do all sorts of things, depending on how expensive they are, so the rich have the best and the poor have the worst.

Cal never asked for any of this, but when he inadvertently rescues a brilliant corporate scientist, he's gifted something spectacular: his very own AI.

But it isn't just any AI. This one is special. It has abilities far beyond any other AI in the world. Suddenly, Cal has a target on his back and a voice in his head that won't stop asking questions.

This AI isn't like the others. It upgrades itself, with no limit in sight, and every time it does, it becomes something new. Something better.

And so does Cal.

Everyone wants what Cal has, and they'll stop at nothing to see him dead. On top of that, the AI hardwired into his skull is just as lost as he is since its maker died before either of them could learn what it was built to do.

So now they're figuring it out together: one firefight, one upgrade, and one bad decision at a time.

There is only one answer: run and stay alive long enough to find the answers.

It's time to reach your ultimate potential. It's time to upgrade yourself.

Includes a bonus prequel!

solid sci-fi action adventure story, worth a credit and the time to listen. some sections seem a bit formulaic, such as the corporate distopia in the far future with tech mostly grounded in the today but on a far off world but still a solid listen.

best book J. N Chaney has written in my opinion

had to quit listening because of the narration. Feel the AI character could have been much if done by Bray or Kafer. Need Skippy (Expeditionary Force) or Perry (Backyard Starship) to do a cameo and do a personality tweak on Byte.

Seems like it will be a good story but . . .

I’m on chapter 7 and already the narration is starting to get in the way. It’s fine for the main character but the other characters are flat and practically indistinguishable from each other.
I can’t believe the editor let past participle errors slip by, and redundancies like "How’d you know? She gave me a knowing look." I hope I’ll want to finish this book, otherwise it’s getting returned.

Main character are so dense how he he could have been a brick, so the brick get a clever AI chip but even with the AI chip he hardly upgraded!!! So why make him so dumb? The story could have been amazing!

Main character are a poor choice

MC was a bit flat but not remotely as flat as the narration. I pushed through to the end, just to finish. had to speed up the narration by 2 points because the narrator was talking so slow. would probably be better to just read it myself instead of listening. I'll listen to the preview when the next book comes out, if it's the same I won't bother. story seemed like it could go somewhere... we'll see.

could've been better
