Really neat premise, leveling up the amp feels almost litrpg-style but the underdog story felt good and gritty still.

Narration kept pulling me out of the story - character differentiation could’ve been a little better, and pacing sometimes felt a bit wonky. Otherwise, it was a pretty good read.

Seems like it will be a good story but . . .

had to quit listening because of the narration. Feel the AI character could have been much if done by Bray or Kafer. Need Skippy (Expeditionary Force) or Perry (Backyard Starship) to do a cameo and do a personality tweak on Byte.

Great story, needs a new narrator ...

This story and characters are great but the narrator doesn't match their needed energy. It is like listening to a middle schooler read aloud in class.... no natural cadence. How did the production team hear this and say "yep that sounds good, run it....." 🤦🏻‍♂️

The narration gets in the way

I’m on chapter 7 and already the narration is starting to get in the way. It’s fine for the main character but the other characters are flat and practically indistinguishable from each other.
I can’t believe the editor let past participle errors slip by, and redundancies like "How’d you know? She gave me a knowing look." I hope I’ll want to finish this book, otherwise it’s getting returned.

best book J. N Chaney has written in my opinion

solid sci-fi action adventure story, worth a credit and the time to listen. some sections seem a bit formulaic, such as the corporate distopia in the far future with tech mostly grounded in the today but on a far off world but still a solid listen.
