In the next book in this New York Times best-selling series, Evan Smoak takes on his most complex mission yet―one where he not only has to protect but also avenge, and find a way to balance vengeance with mercy.

Once a black ops assassin for the government known as Orphan X, Evan Smoak broke with the program and went deep underground, using his operational rules and skills to help the truly desperate with nowhere else to turn.

When Luke Devine, one of the most powerful men in the world, has a psychological crisis, Evan flies to the East Coast to help him. While there, he learns of a young woman who was kidnapped off the New York City subway, clearly in danger and in need of aid. With no name and few clues, Evan and his team track down the missing woman, who was assaulted and abandoned. Evan offers his help―and sets out finding the young men responsible. But the woman insists that Evan abandon his usual methods―no vengeance and, in particular, no killing. Which will prove no easy feat given the mounting incoming threats from all sides. In a mission that takes Evan from coast to coast, from the poorest corners of society to the richest, Orphan X must figure out a way to protect the innocent, avenge the victimized, and balance justice with a measure of mercy.

“Narrator Scott Brick's sterling efforts add to a novel that is both a fast-paced thriller and a gripping character study.” — Kirkus

It is rare for me to find an author who creates a series that not only doesn’t fizzle out after the second or third book, but actually gets better and more intriguing as it continues. also,
I have grown to care for and appreciate the characters and their various relationships, as well as their witty repartée. Scott Brick, as usual, does an entertaining and spot-on performance. I heartily recommend this book and The whole series.

Keeps getting better and better

The Nowhere Man comes up against his trickiest mission, yet. But not for the reasons you would think..

With the passing of his closest “friend” Evan Smoak has to learn how to navigate his feelings and relationships - something that as an Orphan who was trained to be a lone assassin he was never taught.

In his latest mission Evan must help someone who does not want his usual help, while also facing the reality of just how complicated and “simple” life is in the “real” world really is. He must question his foundation for everything he does as the Nowhere Man. At the same time Evan also is required to manage his evolving relationships with those that are closest to him, and also how he fits - or doesn’t fit - into the “real” world.

Will Evan’s inability to deal with having emotions he doesn’t know how to name or describe being his final undoing? Can the Nowhere Man do his job without being the weapon he has been created to be? Can Evan finally learn the complexities of how to have a conversation and survive a real “date”? Or will Evan’s lack of relationship training drive away those closest to him and send him scurrying back into the shadows, or into arms of the law, or those who seek to destroy him?

Another fantastic episode of The Nowhere Man that is so much deeper than a typical Jason Bourne secret assassin thriller. While not the most action-packed of the Orphan X novels, there is still plenty of it. I love the thoughtfulness, the emotional maturity, the questioning of everything that seems so simple on the surface, and the humorous interactions of someone so is skilled and yet has never learned to have small talk and who only sweats when riding in crowded elevators and attending dinner parties and HOA meetings.

I really enjoyed this story and the growth in the characters was beautiful. I was disappointed by the author making one sided political jabs and they did not help the story in any way- felt childish and unnecessary,

Great story-disappointed by the one sided political jabs

I think this is the best x book yet. Although I say that after every new book.

I love these books. I'm always very sad when the book is over. I hope Evan doesn't become to touchy feely. If you are a fan here is another adventure you'll have fun going on

once again sad it is over
