As a Marine, Henry Morgan would have said it was more likely he’d die from enemy fire than from being struck by a flying lawnmower while at a baseball game.

But it was the lawnmower that ended up taking him out.

A century later, Henry wakes up as a reconstituted intelligence, and is promptly drafted to be the governing AI for America’s first military starship. After decades of model-trained AIs wreaking havoc across the globe, humanity is ready to try something a little more…human.

Henry is perfect. For one thing, as a reconstituted intelligence, he has no rights and can be forced to do the bidding of the powers that be. For another, he’s the only Heritage Mind™ with any military experience that survived the Great Power Surge of 2072.

So, Henry’s it.

Blastoff, good Henry! Our hopes and dreams go with you. Oh, and while you’re at it, could you take a look at the aliens setting up shop in our asteroid belt? They seem to be…multiplying.

The narration is fantastic as usual from Mark Boyett. What do I mean by it's Stargate Universe? Well that show should have been called something else as it was certainly not part of the the Stargate "universe". Stargate teams are the best of the best but the team in universe was a bunch of back stabbing, spouse cheating, incompetent miserable people. That is exactly what the crew of I, Starship is and that makes it very hard to get through. Henry the main character is a Marine that dies and has his brain copied as the ships AI but we are lead to believe that he is sentient as real person. For reasons that are NEVER explain almost everyone treat him like dog crap especially the captain. There are so many things that irritate me about this story but one of the biggest is what a gutless pushover Henry is. He is definitely not like any Marine I ever knew or served with.

The book is worth listening to just the great job Mark Boyett does, I would not have finished it other wise.

It's Stargate Universe again!!!

not a bad start! I hope the main characters become a bit more fleshed out and hopefully the ship becomes formidable instead of earth's pinto at the F1 race with the other ailens.

has potential

Starts off strong. About halfway in the nominal protagonist gets shoved way to the backround. In fact he could be part of the furniture for all the impact he has on the story. Adding insult to injury, the second part of the book not only hardly mentions Henry, rather it hardly mentions the ship at all. The story does not move one step forward for hours.

As you may or may not know, A good story operates with therefore-s. For example: Something happened, therefore this other thing is happening now.
This book is more like. Something happened then some other thing happened, now a bunch of other things are happening and none of it has any bearing on the overarching plot. It’s lime watching a 10 hour series that really should have been a 90 minute movie.

Starts strong, then gets worse and worse and worse.

If you like epic space opera with craftsmanship writing that includes a novel approach to a digital sidekick, imperious ship captain, lackluster marine contingent, several alien encounters, wild card stowaway, intrigue, betrayal and delivered by a narrator whose performance is riveting, this book has it all.

Mentally run, don't walk your fingers to purchase the book all the while knowing that book 2 is, as of this writing, not yet released.

Outstanding!

One thing this author does really well, is get us to CARE about the main character. Some parts, where he was locked out entirely of the system were highly frustrating. I wondered why he didn’t devise a way to get around the governing AI during the first decade alone. I too loved to hate the captain. His inability to listen is something that actually happens more often than not in positions of control, especially when you have as green of technology and crew as he did. I found everything believable, and the narration completely on point!

Fantastic read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very well written and it was exiting and fast paced.

Impossible not to get the next in series!

I like how it goes into details and how deep it goes on how humans treat people they don't understand or that are differnt from themselves like Henry.

the depths

I was kinda thrown off with how weird the military people, commander etc of the ship acts, the AI etc and the writing and descriptions of these characters seemed a little juvenile but now I think I get why they were deliberately written that way. It’s part of the story and the mystery that has to be solved for.

Without spoilers when you get to the weird parts military leaders crying about how they are not good enough or irrationally bad commanders and crews don’t lose hope like I did, there is (I think) a reason for them being written this way.

Really look forward to the next one

Wow, great new series (a little weird at first)

The story has its flaws especially with character development but it’s a good story and well suited for Mark Boyett’s narration style. I’ve listened to over 500 scifi books on audible and have signed up for book 2.

Better than the reviews suggest

Sgt Henry Morgan, was a Marine at a baseball game, suddenly killed by a flying lawnmower and waking up as a reconstituted mind aboard Earth’s starship, Interchange! And, Henry controls the ship, or more accurately, Henry IS the ship!! Thus begins our rollicking adventure among the stars, and the first installment of this great series, written by Scott Bartlett and performed by Mark Boyett. Enjoy…
