Pippi Longstocking

By: Astrid Lindgren, Susan Beard - translator

Narrated by: Sutton Foster

Tony award-winning actress Sutton Foster narrates the beloved story of a strong, spunky girl and her hilarious adventures in this new recording, celebrating the 80th anniversary of Pippi Longstocking!

Tommy and his sister Annika have a new neighbor, and her name is Pippi Longstocking. She has red pigtails, no parents to tell her what to do, a horse that lives on her porch, and a pet monkey named Mr. Nilsson. Whether Pippi's scrubbing her floors, doing arithmetic, or stirring things up at a fancy tea party, her flair for the outrageous always seems to lead to another adventure.

Pippi

this is a fun, adventurous children's book that I purchased forbasically no money! I could enjoy this book before bed forever!

Foster is Pippi!

Foster made me love the nutty, wonderful Pippi. I felt like I lived next door to her!

Missing Pippi’s birthday chapter (chapter 11).

My children loved listening to this, but chapter 11 is missing no matter how we download the book. It skips from chapter 10 to the ending credits. Chapter 11 is a delightful imagining of Pippi’s birthday party, so it is a pretty major omission.

Fun, silly listen.

Listening after decades ago reading Pipi's adventures are as silly today as they were then which was the point, of course. It was fun to do my chores with the audio going meanwhile thinking how much fun Pippi was when I was six and seven. I really wanted her horse but even then I knew a horse should really be in a pasture rather than on the veranda. I did wonder how someone her age could be so strong, too. Interesting memories.

Abridged! Missing an Entire Chapter

My family has enjoyed Pippi Longstocking and this version was the third reading (first time listening to this one). I thought the narrator was excellent. We were all disappointed to find the last chapter, "Pippi Celebrates Her Birthday," was completely missing. This edition claims to be unabridged but an entire chapter?! I have read through a paper copy and listened to a library edition that didn't leave these out. Also less frustrating but still a point of criticism for me is that this version calls her Papa a South Sea Island King target than a cannibal king. I realize it could be a translation discrepancy, but all other Pippi I've encountered says cannibal, so it feels like some modern day attempt to whitewash the story.
