Abarrach, the Realm of stone. Here, on a barren world of underground caverns built around a core of molten lava, the lesser races -- humans, elves, and dwarves -- seem to have all died off. Here, too, what may well be the last remnants of the once powerful Sartan still struggle to survive. For Haplo and Alfred -- enemies by heritage, traveling companions by necessity -- Abarrach may reveal more than either dares to discover about the history of Sartan... and the future of all their descendants.

Loved it. The continuation of the two main characters works well, following the first two books in the series.

For the third instalment in the series this book was a lot darker than the previous ones. The writing was very atmospheric. I had no trouble seeing the world the authors painted. The struggle to survive was dark and sad to witness. While the Sartan weren’t prevalent on the other worlds they seemed to be the only ones that could survive in this world. It was a sad thought that the Sartan couldn’t save them. Necromancy was all that they had left of their magic. Once they were a very powerful race, now reduced to a shadow of their former selves.
I felt for Alfred in this book. Seeing what his people have become. While his people sundered the world before these books began, I’m not sure that was necessary. I’ve had a soft spot for both the main characters, but in different ways. For Alfred the search for his people seemed to parallel his feelings for the past. For Haplo his rage and hostility towards those who hurt him seems understandable. Though his blind obedience in his master does bother me somewhat. The prophecy they kept referencing I found very interesting and while it was referenced frequently I was glad they answered it in the end. The end of the book was written well and the authors set us up for the next book well. I’ve always wanted to finish this series, I guess we will see how far I get, and here we go, on to the next.
