Publisher's summary

"A vigorous, sparkling, and entertaining love story with plenty of Austen-ite wit." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

"One of the most highly anticipated books of the fall historical romance lineup." (Austenprose)

She couldn't forget....

Wealthy squire's daughter Margaret Honeywell was always meant to marry her neighbor, Frederick Burton-Smythe, but it's bastard-born Nicholas Seaton who has her heart. Raised alongside her on her father's estate, Nick is the rumored son of notorious highwayman Gentleman Jim. When Fred frames him for theft, Nick escapes into the night, vowing to find his legendary sire. But Nick never returns. A decade later, he's long been presumed dead.

He wouldn't forgive....

After years spent on the continent, John Beresford, Viscount St. Clare has finally come home to England. Tall, blond, and dangerous, he's on a mission to restore his family's honor. If he can mete out a bit of revenge along the way, so much the better. But he hasn't reckoned for Maggie Honeywell. She's bold and beautiful - and entirely convinced he's someone else.

As danger closes in, St. Clare is torn between love and vengeance. Will he sacrifice one to gain other? Or, with a little daring, will he find a way to have them both?

So Good!

After finishing this book, I promptly began reading it again. The narrator was fantastic with many different accents and equally fantastic with both male and female voices. I highly recommend!

SU-PRISE! Intricately written

The narrators voice is just like whiskey. Loved listening to it. Everyone’s dialogue sounded dramatic but hey I’m reading a dramatic novel.

Mimi did a great job putting effort into the story and not just their relationship difficulties. It was a fascinating story, not just a fascinating dramatic relationship. There weren’t any graphic lovemaking scenes, and that helped add believability and enjoyment to the story she spent so much time on :)

Wish I could have had a second book about her friend though. I could have kept reading this… :)

Clean Regency Romance

I really liked this story, especially listening to the narrator. I thought he was a little breathy when reading The Work Of Art, the first in this series, but I didn't notice that in this book. I think he really made the story for me, especially the male dialog.

I couldn't figure out why this was the second in a series, when there didn't seem to be a connection to the first book. Now I know! Book 3 ties them together. I actually have an ARC copy of that ready to read, but I will miss listening to it.

An Excellent Love Story

Absorbing take eitu excellent characters. This is romance historical fiction, it’s not high level literature, but for what it is, it’s excellent. I enjoyed every moment of it and Alex Wyndham is always a gem of a narrator. I defy you to find a narrator who can play a more devastating rake! His deep warm baritone was made for this kind of book. Well written, well paced, excellent characters and a terrific love story. Highly recommended.

She’s done it again

I so delight in Mimi Matthews audiobooks! Great story, great narration. Some of it was a little predictable but it was all very enjoyable. If you like clean Regency Romance, you’ll love it. (Little bit of swearing and the kissing gets pretty steamy)

So good

This book was so good! I did not want it to end. Like all Mimi Matthews books this was a totally captivating story full of suspenseful romance and just enough intrigue. This was the best book I have listened to in a long time.

Romance?!?

I like the title and the price was right so I purchased this book before reading the book details. I do not like ROMANCE books, movies or songs. They all seem predictable, forced and stupid. However because I purchased this book I’m going to give it a go!!
I’ll give it a proper review when I finish it or when I can’t stand another minute of it. I’m looking forward to this experiment!!
I’ll write soon.

Incredible, delightful, beautiful, romantic

(Aug 2020) Wow! In the past 48 hours when I was not working or reading this book, I was dreaming about it. Many months ago when I was initially reading the preface to this book in Mimi Matthews newsletter I absolutely knew it would be incredible. It is not an exaggeration to say that I have thought about it so many times in the past months, wishing it would be released sooner. I was incredibly joyful to discover that I had been the lucky recipient of an early release of the book! What joy!

I am wildly in love with this story, let alone with Nicholas and Maggie. This book had everything that could hold my heart in so many different directions. There was pain and heartache, a multitude of mystery, intriguing side characters, and most of all an incredibly winsome, delightful, intense, and beautiful romance... and a heartwarming epilogue to boot!

Oh how I love this story and how much I will miss these characters! I feel sure I will be dreaming of them again tonight. I understand the audible version will be released in the not-too-distant future and I will most certainly have it on pre-order as soon as it is available.

(Feb ‘23) I just read and listened to this book again. Truly one of my favorites.

Awesome storyline

Narration was really good! The plot was so different from most of the regency books I've read. I was so intrigued to see how this book would end. I really enjoyed it!

Unexpected!

I started listening to this book with very low expectations. It goes to show that sometimes you can find a very nice story when you don’t expect it.

Well deserved Happily Ever After for these Star Crossed Lovers.

The narrator was excellent!

Recommended audiobook.
