Publisher's summary

From the author of the best-selling Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood series comes a tough new heroine who is far more than she seems.

After the Final War, after the appearance of the Bug aliens and their enforced peace, Shining Smith is still alive, still doing business from the old scrapyard bequeathed to her by her father. But Shining is now something more than human. And the scrapyard is no longer just a scrapyard, but a place full of secrets that she has guarded for years.

This life she has built, while empty, is predictable and safe. Until the only friend left from her previous life shows up, dead, in the back of a scrapped Tesla warplane. Clutched in her cold fingers is a note to Shining - warning her of a coming attack.

With dread, Shining realizes: Someone knows who she is. Someone knows what she is guarding. Will she be able to protect the scrapyard? Will she even survive? Or will Shining have to destroy everything she loves to keep her secrets out of the wrong hands?

Stunningly Imaginative, Surprising, & Intriguing

I could not stop listening, even though I had other things to do. As always, Khristine Hvam provided just the right voices for the characters in this audio book.

I've been a fan of Faith Hunter's various books for a number of years.

I'm delighted by this very different world, its characters, the inclusion of AIs that have personalities, the astounding armament for the battles, the plot lines, and especially the Junkyard Cats, who are amazing beings.

Another outstanding success, Faith! Thank you.

A New Homerun by Uber-Author Faith Hunter!

A new story in a new (hopefully!) series, and definitely a great read. Only available in Audible now, but I look forward to also buying it as an ebook. Loved it!

Let's Have More!

I would love to read/hear a series of books from this story. Also, a prequel would be great where we could learn the terminology better and experience Shining's history.

Fantastic

Loved it. Faith's story telling is so descriptive you feel like you are in the story too. I love fantasy/sci fi, so this is so much up my alley! I can't wait to read/listen to more of this world.

An enjoyable story but ...

Good story with plenty of action but I found the reader's voice nasal and irritating. Her cadence and emphases were great but the accent nearly made me turn it off.

interesting concept

I think the basis for the story was good, but I felt it could have been executed better. I initially read it mainly because it had a female lead and luckily I wasn't disappointed with her character, but overall the story could have been developed better.

Excellent Story. I hope there are more

I rarely enjoy books by female authors but this is a rare exception. I can't think of anything I disliked about the book. I am now forced to look at her other works because I really really liked this book. I really hope that there are more in this series.
The audible performance was also spot on. This book falls outside of my usual audible selections but I am pleased that audible made in a free purchase this January because I am sure I will find more works by this author that I can enjoy.
