Publisher's summary

"Matthews has a knack for creating slow-building chemistry and an intriguing plot with a social history twist." -Library Journal

She wanted sanctuary...

Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey isn't the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill - though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome - is anything but a romantic hero.

He needed redemption...

Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison. Now, he needs someone to smooth the way for him with the villagers. Someone to manage his household - and warm his bed on occasion. What he needs, in short, is a wife and a matrimonial advertisement seems the perfect way to acquire one. Their marriage was meant to be a business arrangement and nothing more. A dispassionate union free from the entanglements of love and affection. But when Helena's past threatens, will Justin's burgeoning feelings for his new bride compel him to come to her rescue? Or will dark secrets of his own force him to let her go?

The story was good

good story but again, the narrator, Justine Eyre sounds like she is in pain when she finishes a sentence. The book is as good as the narrator.
Sorry, that's my humble opinions.

Very enjoyable

An entertaining read. Love the story line, well developed characters, and the historical properties of this book. Looking back at what was caused me to appreciate what is.

Borring

The story of this book really gets nowhere. Just a bunch of pointless back amd fourth.

It's Been A Long Time Since I've Been Addicted

I can't remember the last time I'm loved a book so and then raced through others by the same author. Matthews is so adept at spinning her romantic tales of imperfect heroes, heroines with problems that need to be resolved, all in a page-turning way, that I'm now a Fan. Went from this to the next two in the series in two weeks. Anxiously awaiting book 4, which the author says will be out in April!

Delightful and Different

I found the storylines to be different and intriguing with compelling characters. Each person had their own strengths and weaknesses and it was a story that hoped would go on and on.

Gifted story weaver

What a gifted story weaver Mimi Mathews is. The use of visual details along with her articulate descriptions of the characters thoughts and emotions come together so beautifully, almost like poetry. Together with the narrator’s incredible talent, it’s a win-win-win.

An excellent representation of the genre

The Matrimonial Advertisement is a great romance set into Victorian England, and is perfect for fans of period romances. It's pretty straightforward, but enjoyable nonetheless. Narration was good.

Enjoyed it very much

This was a clean, well-written light read. No sex scenes if you’re looking for that. Good plot and character development. Narrator was excellent as well. It was easy to feel the characters’ emotions.

I kept waiting for some big reveal.... climax....nothing

The book was just meh. I kept waiting for some big reveal.... climax....nothing!! I am a fan of Lisa Kleypas and for some reason I thought this author’s writing would be similar but um NOPE. It wasn’t bad but I was bored and the only reason I finished was because I really thought there was going to be some action/fighting/hero antics.
FYI I’m no fan of steamy ❤️ scenes but this has like absolutely nothing except for two episodes of kisses, really that’s it. One in the beginning and the next in the epilogue. It was a big laugh. I dunno, just wasn’t my cup of tea. So much for trying something different while waiting for my usual author to put out her next book!!
