Publisher's summary

Fifteen-year-old Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenage golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her. And then she was gone.

Now her mother, Laurel Mack, is trying to put her life back together. It's been 10 years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie's case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a cafe, she is surprised at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she's meeting Floyd's daughters - and his youngest, Poppy, takes her breath away. Looking at her is like looking at Ellie. And now the unanswered questions she has tried so hard to put to rest haunt her anew...as well as some new ones about Floyd and Poppy....

Drove from Raleigh to Tampa just to listen to this

Is your family going on an intolerable roadtrip? Are you about to spend 10 hours of your time with people you'd rather not be trapped in a moving vehicle with? If you said yes, you NEED this book. My entire family got sucked into this book for the entirety of our Florida trip in the car, hanging onto this suspenseful story. Every time we entered the car the first thing that was said was "PUT ON THE BOOK!" This will save your family vacation👍

Entertaining

The story was slow starting but once it got going it was a page turner. Somewhat predictable in places. I enjoyed it.

Predictable but good story

Suspenseful but not like a who done it type of suspense. I wish each character who narrates type chapter was announced. Several times it took a minute or two to figure out who was speaking.

fantastic narration, predictable plot

I enjoyed listening to this overall. There is a lot of dialogue, and the narrator modulates her voice differently for each character in a way that makes it clear who is speaking without being distracting or over-the-top. The story is good, but the characters were a bit stiff and one-dimensional, and I had correctly guessed the twist ending before I was halfway through. It was a good listen while I was working to keep me on task, but it isn't something I'd have wanted to read in book form. To be fair, I'm more of a fantasy person, so this is a bit out of my usual genre of interest. That said, if you loved The Girl on the Train (not really my thing either) you'll probably also love this, so don't take my opinion fully at face value ☺️

Disturbing

The narrator is superb. She absolutely captured me. The story is a mind bender for a long while, and almost too dark for my taste, but as I said, the narrator performance was exceptional and so i had to finish the story!

Devastating story of a mother’s loss.

This was one of the most intense and devastating books I have ever heard. It is written from multiple people’s views and interwoven into a heartbreaking tale. It is the story of a mother whose 15 year old daughter goes missing. The reader was superb in this Audible edition.

Beautifully Told. Haunting Story.

The ending was bittersweet. It kept me intrigued the entire time. Lisa Jewell depicts characters’ psychology compellingly.
