With unflinching honesty and moving prose, Janet Mock relays her experiences of growing up young, multiracial, poor, and trans in America, offering listeners accessible language while imparting vital insight about the unique challenges and vulnerabilities of a marginalized and misunderstood population.

Though undoubtedly an account of one woman's quest for self at all costs, Redefining Realness is a powerful vision of possibility and self-realization, pushing us all toward greater acceptance of one another - and of ourselves - showing as never before how to be unapologetic and real.

Janet Mocks story speaks to me personally as a trans woman. Her story depicts the unbelievable issues in the LGBT community and reassures the readers (or in this case, listeners) that it gets better.

I first read ‘Redefining Realness’ by Janet Mock in 2015 as a young Genderfluid who was suppressing her true identity as a Trans Woman. It’s now 2021 and I reread this memoir to help me understand myself, my journey, and come to terms with the revelation that I am a Trans Woman of Color.

An eloquent baring of soul and heartfelt sharing of the ups, downs and difficulties that one faces on the road to self, personal truth and one's own authenticity and personal success. The book is well written and narrated; the people and experiences in our lives for good or for ill that help to shape us into the wonderful multi layered tapestries that we are becoming with an exhortation to be mindful of those who may need our understanding, acceptance and love. Very humorous at times, along with the pain, I identified on many levels
