From the simple setting of his own barber shop, Jayber Crow, orphan, seminarian, and native of Port William, recalls his life and the life of his community as it spends itself in the middle of the 20th century.

Surrounded by his friends and neighbors, he is both participant and witness as the community attempts to transcend its own decline. And meanwhile Jayber learns the art of devotion and that a faithful love is its own reward.

Truly a book of wonder & delight. A book of sadness & goodness. A book from another time but yet for today. A book of questioning & of faith.

I don’t remember when I’ve ever been so saddened for a book to end. I just wanted to continue living in Jayber’s mundane, yet wonderful life. Berry’s writing is so beautiful, I found myself pausing and rewinding over and over, just to hear again the poetry and wisdom of his words. I can’t recommend this book enough. My only disappointment was the performance. I didn’t care for the southern accents the narrator used for the characters; though I got used to it.

This story offers the perfect blend of characters, nostalgia, practical philosophy, and cultural critique. The pacing ushers you into a time and space that makes careful consideration of the themes possible. My favorite of the Port William membership, and that's saying a lot.

A thing of beauty

This audiobook was my first encounter with Jayber Crow - and with Wendell Berry - and I was completely taken by it. Powerful, poignant, and piercing, it elucidates truths of life and draws realities of historic and cultural change, ecology of person and place, and love of ones neighbor into a radiant novel to be cherished.

Moves slowly, but really makes you think and helps you remember things long forgotten about yourself and the world. Narrator was really good too.

A small town story intertwined with profundity
