Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One

By: Judy Blume

Narrated by: Kathleen McInerney, Judy Blume

MEET THE PAIN

My sister's name is Abigail. I call her The Great One because she thinks she's so great. Who cares if she's in third grade and I'm just in first?

MEET THE GREAT ONE

My brother's name is Jacob Edward, but everyone calls him Jake. Everyone but me. I call him The Pain because that's what he is. He's a first-grade pain. I'll always know exactly what he's thinking. That's just the way it is. These seven warm-hearted stories will give young listeners a peek at how a brother and sister relate to each other.

Critic reviews

Starred review, School Library Journal, August 2007:
"[T]he stories are sweet and accurately depict the growing pains of childhood."

Great book for siblings

This book was a hit with my 6 yo son and 8 yo daughter. They could identify the with ups and downs of sibling relationships. Judy Blume strikes just the right balance between realism and possibility. The children have fears and overcome them, and the adults have just the right level of imperfection. Highly, highly recommend this book.

Funny story

My son loved it! I heard him laughing a lot while listening to it, so that made me really happy!

Gee Pain, what do wanna do tonight?

🎶The Great One and the Pain, The Great One and the Pain. One is a genius, the other’s insane. They’re laboratory mice. Their genes have been spliced. It’s the Great One. The Great One and the Pain, Pain, Pain, Pain, Pain.🎶

Excellent book to read to the kids.

Excellent book to read the kids. The children can relate to it and so can I as an adult when I was a child taking back to my sisters and I.
