Great Apple history filled with a lot of new stuff, but WHY THAT AWFUL SIDEBAR SOUND?

Overall, this is a great book and maybe one of the best books about Apple ever written. David Pogue did an outstanding job writing AND narrating.

However, there is one huge problem with the audio book. The sound it plays for every sidebar is WAY too loud and jarring!! I was listening to the book out loud the other day and when it came to another sidebar (every few minutes, by the way) and played that sound, my wife said, “WHAT WAS THAT SCARY SOUND?!” It’s honestly like the Sosumi sound on steroids… a horrible, dissonant, loud, musical sound which actually makes me jump a little every time I hear it. I would NOT recommend listening to this book while lying in bed or without earbuds.

It’s actually surprising, given David Pogue’s musical background. Did he really think this was a good idea, or did he just listen to someone else who gave him terrible advice? A soft, gentle bell sound would have sufficed and it would have made for a much more pleasant listening experience.

Depth and Scope of History Covered

I grew up in Cupertino, was an Apple user since the mid-late 80's, and found myself working there from 1991 through 2009 as a contractor and an employee. I remain as embedded in their ecosystem as the six colors that still course through my veins. Many of my friends and colleagues and I were watching so much of this history play out from the sidelines, and often from the fields themselves. Hands-on.
To be walked through all of this history feels like revisiting a substantial chunk of my life's passions and passages. I feel so very fortunate to have all of these invaluable memories. I only wish I still had the stock. :-/

Treasure of a Book

A meticulously researched, fun to listen to a trip down memory lane. So many things I may have known at one time, but that had faded in my mind. How nice to have them retold with the perspective of time and reflection and I cannot imagine a better person to write it.

It made me nostalgic and appreciative of the wonder and benefits that I got with that first iPod Touch and my first iPhone 4 when I threw away the BlackBerry and began my Apple Journey.

Comprehensive and a lot of fun

I wish it had a companion PDF with illustrations from the book, the author sings in the audiobook, that could be consider a very modest compensation.

Still, I just ordered the hardcover…

The Apple Story Told by the People Who Were There

I’ve been reading David Pogue’s coverage of Apple since the days of his writing at MacWorld. He was the right person for this job.

If, like me, you’ve been an Apple fan, user, and self-confessed nerd, many of these stories will be familiar, but Pogue’s knowledge, research, and interviews really help give you the context of those events. There are also tons of great tales that I knew nothing about.

If you aren’t so steeped in Apple lore, you’ll probably be surprised by how many technologies that we take for granted today were developed and realized by the Apple team.

In some ways, it’s a bitter sweet story of triumph and loss, of the best intentions and the obstacles that get in the way of bringing those ideas to life. I’m certainly a person who longs for the days when Apple really seemed to have a moral stance that I don’t believe it can claim anymore.

But listening to Mr. Pogue’s words took me back to my days growing up alongside the Mac, a time when my creativity was sparked and supported by these new technologies. It was a fantastic and I appreciate the work that was obviously put into this project. Also, bonus points for the author (also a CBS news contributor) for an excellent reading!
