Publisher's summary

This richly nuanced novel tells of an ordinary man faced with an incredible dilemma - to save his wife's life he must risk losing her forever.

Michaela, beloved wife and mother of two, lies in a coma. Doctors have told her husband Liam not to expect a recovery, but he maintains hope that love can accomplish what medicine cannot. Day after day, he sits by her bedside, holding her hand, sharing the stories of their life together.

Then he discovers the evidence of his wife's secret past - a long hidden first marriage to international movie star Julian True. When he sees photos of her glowing happiness with Julian, he knows the actor was more than simply Michaela's first husband. He was the love of her life. Liam senses that Julian is the one person who can bring her back to life, but at what cost? Can Liam love his wife enough to risk losing her to a man no woman could resist?

Lessons in life

Without being preachy Kristin Hannah sorts out life's complications into simple recognizable truth. She is a great story teller.

A good book

This was a good book. It wasn’t a great book like The Great Alone or The Four Winds. The character of the nine year old boy needed work. He was sweet, but I had to go back and see if he experienced cognitive delay or something that would explain why at nine he wouldn’t cross the road by himself. He was still sucking his thumb, and sitting on his dad’s lap. The tone of his speech reminded me of Beaver in the old sit come “Leave It To Beaver.” I wouldn’t recommend, but it’s ok.

Heartwrenching

Carrying a torch for your first love is a reality for many women. It can prevent you from fully loving the truly good men in your life. This heroine Michaela needed a nearly fatal accident to appreciate fully the real love in her life.
Despite the too syrupy dialogue, I loved the story and the emotional intelligence of it.
The narrator was good at male voices but terrible at women and children’s voices.

OK book, Not so for narrator

NOT HANNAH's best book, but I did finished it. The narrator also made an ordinary book difficult to finish.

Disappointing

I am a HUGE Kristin Hannah fan, but this one fell short. I just could not connect with the characters. Pick another-Once in Every Lifetime is an excellent choice.

Very slow!!

Story was very drawn out and slow. But once invested I wanted to know the end.
