I'm stopping here in the series. While the combat in this book was genuinely thrilling, I found myself struggling with the constant, repetitive dialogue and internal monologues. It felt like every other sentence was another variation of someone yelling about "courting death" or demanding others prostrate themselves.

The first few chapters were particularly rough, but even as the story moved on, the same patterns of threats and confrontations continued. Another element that really bothered me was the frequent use of abilities fueled by life force or lifespan. It’s a concept that feels like a shortcut to tension, and when both the main character and others can use it over and over and then easily restore their life, it loses its impact.

The main character's motivations also became a source of frustration for me. With side characters constantly under attack, it felt like the entire plot revolved around him trying to heal or save everyone, which quickly got repetitive.

I was so tempted to skip ahead just to get past the dialogue, but instead, I sped up the playback to 2x speed. While this helped me get through the annoying parts without missing the story, it's not something I should have to do to enjoy a book. The story does eventually get better, but it's not enough to make me want to continue the series.

A mixed bag of fantastic combat and frustrating dialogue.
