Soon he is enmeshed in the oppressive attentions of matriarch Muriel, who is often heavily medicated, and of fifteen-year-old Martin, who treats Tommie sometimes like a kid brother, sometimes like a pawn in a confusing game. While Dr. Henneberry mostly ignores Tommie, he also seems eager for him to be gone. Then there’s the elderly neighbour, who may know more about the family's past than anyone else will say.
By summer's end, the secrets and games tighten around Tommie and his mother, until a horrific crime is discovered and we are faced with an unthinkable question: could an eleven-year-old boy really have committed cold-blooded murder?

I want to meet Thomas.

Everything about it was fantastic and disturbing at the same time. Also, I enjoyed the narrator's voice.

Good story, but

I liked the story. The narrator was ok; he did mispronounce a couple words. My biggest problem with the book is that Thomas is supposed to be 11 years old, so why was his character more like a 6 year old?

Wow!

This is one of the best books I’ve listened to. People who complain the narrator “mispronounced” words failed to understand the author and narrator are Canadian and pronounce some words differently than Americans.

Incredible & unique story

Loved this story. Great writing and very unique. Several twists in this story and well developed characters.

Well written but heart wrenching

There were so many moments where I couldn't catch my breath for all of atrocities Ithat were described. I have a hard time listening to accounts of people ( especially children) being manipulated. gaslit and tortured. While not a horror story, this was horrific. I don't have first hand knowledge about the justice system as it related to juveniles back in the 1950's, but as described it painted an even more barbaric picture of Thomas's circumstances. There was literally no one to protect this child, and while he was indeed just a child, I am ashamed to admit that at times I found myself blaming him for things that transpired. This book evoked a lot of emotions for me, mainly uncomfortable ones. It was well written, but not for the faint of heart.
