Publisher's summary

This straightforward guide is for parents who struggle with controlling their emotions around their children, specifically stress and anger.

A Therapist’s Guide to Anger Management: How to Manage Your Emotions and Stop Being A Reactive Parent So You Can Raise Calm and Confident Kids is for parents and caregivers that want a respectful response to the needs of their kids.

As an experienced psychotherapist, I have seen many relationships strengthened with a hands-on approach to slow down the emotional rollercoaster kids and caregivers can get stuck on. From courses in ethics to family systems theory, I teach future clinicians how to put theory into practice in a meaningful way. I have seen that it is possible to use tools like mindfulness in the therapeutic process and that we model healthy behavior for our kids when we do. "He always does this. I swear he is leaving a mess just to piss me off!" Sound familiar? There is no such thing as good or bad feelings. Some feelings can be uncomfortable, others we are more used to, but we can ultimately learn to control how we internalize them and respond to them in every situation. As parents when we label our emotions, we open ourselves up to harmful actions such as self-shaming and self-judgement. This opens up the likelihood of making poor judgments on behalf of ourselves and those we love. There is a real purpose in using the exercises and tools here.

In this book, we will practice:

  • Breathing techniques that slow down our flight or fight response so we can make better choices
  • Creating a path to understanding how our family of origin and other important life events shaped our parenting techniques
  • Easy-to-use techniques for regulating adult emotions so that our kids get to experience their childhood fully

Purchasing this book will provide you with specific ways to calm yourself, respond to the needs of your kids, and learn practices that are time-tested to improve your relationships.

Practical and really helpful!

Every parent should read this book! It’s practical, giving a lot of techniques and good advice on managing emotions. Not only your child’s emotions but also your emotions. So helpful to empower parents at any stage (small children, teenagers or young adults, etc) to be proactive and mindful at this great task of being the provider of a safety place so they can bloom. The HALT approach seems so simple but so deep at the same time! I recommend this book 100%. Implementing the advice given by the author will surely take time because we have been impacted by our own upbringing (our parent’s parenting style) but there is always space for growth and improvement if the method is productive and we see the impact our change can make in our children’s life. Buy it now, you won’t regret it and future generations will be touched by it.

Great Resource for all!

Anger Management for Parents is a topic that concerns most of us in society either because you are a parent, educator or supporting families, which I feel closely related to as a mother and supporting staff member for about 18 years in a school system. Something I found fascinating is the ability to advise families and children to help them achieve a better understanding of each other in order to create more meaningful relationships.
The author describes well how our minds work and how we sometimes react to certain situations out of emotions and impulse causing distance instead of closeness between parents and children.
I recommend this book to parents and educators as a starting point to put in practice the advice and resources given to improve our relationships.
Also, it seems to be a great starting point to be promoted in the school systems as a support tool through the school counseling and clinical teams to teach basic concepts of psychological laws of emotions. this would be great for new Americans to consider.

Great read and super informative!

As a pediatric speech language pathologist and someone who has struggled with anger issues in their past,
this book discusses some important techniques and strategies for any parent or even person who is trying to
respond in a meaningful calm way without letting our anger get the best of us. Children are malleable and
need positive models for their behavior. As a child, we are heavily impressionable and how our parents or
caretakers choose to act in a specific situation can play a massive role in our entire life, which is why this
book is a must read for any "to-be" or "expected" parents. Highly recommend.

Practical guidance and understanding

This book provides a down-to-earth approach to anger issues in a family with small children. It addresses some basic concepts and symptoms of emotions that impact life with children and provides guidance for self-help and understanding. Basic, but good! If you are looking for a scientific discussion of the topic, look elsewhere. Recommended!

Excellent Resource

Review from my wife who bought the book: “This book is an essential resource for parents as well as for anyone who wants to become a better version of themselves and learn how to manage their emotions, especially anger. I really appreciated that this book is not too long and not too short either—I loved that the author included valuable examples that help you understand the concepts. As a mental health professional myself, I highly recommend this book.”
