Publisher's summary

Thorne Manor has always been haunted...and it has always haunted Bronwyn Dale. As a young girl, Bronwyn could pass through a time slip in her great-aunt's house, where she visited William Thorne, a boy her own age, born two centuries earlier. After a family tragedy, the house was shuttered and Bronwyn was convinced that William existed only in her imagination.

Now, 20 years later Bronwyn inherits Thorne Manor. And when she returns, William is waiting.

William Thorne is no longer the boy she remembers. He’s a difficult and tempestuous man, his own life marred by tragedy and a scandal that had him retreating to self-imposed exile in his beloved moors. He’s also none too pleased with Bronwyn for abandoning him all those years ago.

As their friendship rekindles and sparks into something more, Bronwyn must also deal with ghosts in the present version of the house. Soon she realizes they are linked to William and the secret scandal that drove him back to Thorne Manor. To build a future, Bronwyn must confront the past.

three words: verb tense agreement

Ok. so I stumbled on this today and the plot sounded intriguing. This is the first title from this author that I have read. Probably will be my last. I'd give 5 stars for the premise. The concept of an outlander type plot, complete with time travel, ghosts, and a haunting mystery.
However the authors technical skills, or lack thereof, ruined the story for me. I couldn't get past the present/past tense flipping (that sometimes happen in middle sentence). I write as an amateur and that is an epic feaux pas. And to be honest I wasn't fond of the political correctness. I read to escape politics and real life.
all in all good plot. good premise. poor technical writing.

Even Better Than I Hoped!

I was given free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review:

When I saw time-travel, ghost story, romance, and mystery all in one book by one of my favorite authors, I about jumped out of my chair. This was everything I wanted and more, and I finished it in one day, staying up way too late in the process. I only wish there could be more of this book. It's been ages since I've been so sucked into a novel, and I almost want to read it again straightaway. It was that good.

Admittedly, I really came to this book for the Victorian, manor on the moors, romance with a brooding gentleman, but I ended up being just as hooked by the mystery and the way it unfolded. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, either losing myself in the romance or waiting to see what Bronwyn would discover next. More than once, I was also pretty spooked my the ghosts, but I'm admittedly pretty weak when it comes to horror. The romance was still very much the heart of the story, but the ghosts and the way they interacted with the romance added just enough suspense to keep the pages turning.

Likewise, I absolutely adored both leads and the way their relationship felt so real despite being between a Victorian English lord and a modern Canadian history professor. Both were charming, interesting, realistic, and endearing, and I was absolutely smitten with them and their romance (and the realistic ways they had to manage being in different time periods).

Narration was superb, and she handled accents incredibly well! I honestly forgot it was a woman voicing William more than once.

I would recommend this to fans of romance, particularly historical romance, who want more depth and plot than you usually find in a bodice-ripper. It was perfect for the Halloween season without being too scary, and a truly immersive reading (listening) experience.

✫✫ 3.75 Stars ✫✫

I'm going to have to go with 3.75 Stars for this one. This book was a very slow book for 75% of the story but then it got exciting and turned out to have a great ending. I liked how everything wraps up and that we get a happy ending. I have some questions about the time travel that didn't really work for me but all in all most of it made sense. The narration was good, in the beginning I struggled with the accents but I got used to them and was easily able to understand the few characters with the odd accent.

Wonderful story; outstanding performance

I love the Otherworld novels by Kelley Armstrong and thought I would give this a try. Truly fantastic. The characters come to life through a combination of superb writing and outstanding performance. More historical romance Kelley! Please!

Another great read!

Loved this book! I expected a love story, the mystery was a bonus. I love the combined elements of mystery, love story and the supernatural elements of ghosts and time travel. I love Kelley Armstrong's books because they never disappoint and this is no exception. The narrator does a good job with voices and accents as well.

Thoroughly enjoyable...

This is not my normal type of story, and nothing I would have normally purchased. However, I’m a huge Kelley Armstrong fan, and was in between listens and decided to give it a shot while waiting for the new Casey Duncan book to be released. I’m so glad I did. Excellent story, excellent narration. Kelley did it again!

So good!

I absolutely loved this book. I read every Kelley Armstrong book that comes out and was surprised to see a different type of story then I'm used to reading by her, but it is well worth the read. Kelley keeps you on the edge of your seat and pulls you through the mystery as is per usual in any of her books, the time travel however was a very pleasant surprise. As someone who also has read and is obsessed with Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, it pulled me in all the more with this story. I love how I can never guess the ending or who the bad guy is, and this book as no different in that aspect. I think the only thing that had me a little disappointed was the ending, it seemed a little rushed and overly corny than I'm used to, but that may just be my own opinion. All in all amazing book! I highly recommend everyone to read this one.

Terrible accents ruined the story

If I hadn’t paid so much to get the book I’d have given up on this part way in. The story is strange, full of English written in a ascribe sweet way that wouldn’t have been particularly true to the time period.
The absolute worst was the awful accents that meant to be Yorkshire but were a generic fake British/Irish/northern/galic/old times mash up . Really just awful.

Save your money or save your credit. I imagine the book is much better via kindle but definitely a regretful purchase and a painful listen

Disappointed

I wish I didn’t have to write this review. I am a huge fan of Kelley Armstrong, in fact it was her Otherworld series that got me back into reading. So I was so looking forward to relaxing and listening to this latest book.
Unfortunately it didn’t take long before my ears were battered with one of the worst Yorkshire accents I’ve ever heard. It was a Yorkshire cup of tea with a spoonful of Scottish/ Irish mixed in.
The English accent was also very predictable.
The narrator herself was very good when using her own voice and told the story well.
The story I found a bit predictable and I’m sure others will enjoy it as a basic love story. But not enough grit in it for me.
I would advise reading the book rather than listening to the audio.

Fun gothic style story

Fun, enjoyable timeslip and ghost story. Terrible UK accents on Audible. The narrator's UK accents were distracting at first but then were just downright funny.

OK, not Armstrong's best, terrible accent attempts

I'm a fan of Kelley Armstrong books but found this was probably my least favourite book though the story was OK. I may have enjoyed this more if I had read it as the truly terrible yorkshire accents attempted, which at first made me laugh out loud, became very distracting and meant I couldnt get lost in the story.

Hmm

I liked this book but it was very cheesy at times. I felt like it should have had more on the ghosts and less lovey dovey crap, but maybe that's just me. I'm not a fan of cheesy love stories. I did enjoy it though, despite the accents by the narrator being very annoying

this was a beautiful story

Well written, well presented and just a beautiful story. a historical romance that had been written with an innocence that felt refreshing. especially as other romance stories can be graphic. this story hits the heart strings and throw in a bit of mystery and supernatural activities, it ticks all my boxes. definitely worth a read/listen. now off to listen to the 2nd book

Predictable but readable

I did very much enjoy the story even though I knew what was going to happen. it was still a lovely tale of love, ghosts, time slips and mystery. The narrator read the story well but her English accents were way off which I found quite off putting. I found myself wishing she would just read it all in her own voice. I will definitely read the next two books though.

Accents!

I tried.
I'm sure the book is well worth a read but the accents used by the narrator are truly awful. So jarring it's difficult to focus on the story. Region is completely wrong, sounds more like garbled Scottish.
Buy the book instead.
I've given 3 stars for the story as I live in hope it's as good as her others.

Accents really bad but don’t be put off.

One of my very favourite authors so I loved the story.
I’m from the UK and I’m sorry but the accents were really bad! The Yorkshire accents were a mixture of terrible Scottish, Irish and something in between.
Don’t let that put you off though as it’s a fantastic story.

I loved this book. The story, the pace, the intrigue. The narrator brought the characters to life. Her interpretation of Williams voice had me wanting to be there with him. Exceptional. I didn’t bother to read any reviews when instantly downloading the second book.

A fascinating historical romance mystery

This was my first book from this author and I have mixed views. Firstly, the story premise was AMAZING. It would make an awesome, intrigue filled film!! With time slips, a murder mystery and romance, the story kept my interest. I tried to pick the murderer the whole way through! However, I didn't think it was exceptionally well written. There were many times where a word was repeated unnecessarily and very obviously needed synonyms at the least. The narrator was OK. Did a pretty good job delivering different accents from men and women. The standout is the story premise itself.
