Publisher's Summary

With King Richard's return from captivity and Prince John's exile, a weary peace settles on England after years of civil war. But across the border in Wales, the vicious struggle to decide who shall rule Gwynedd still rages.

To tip the balance, the rebel Prince, Llywelyn, calls in an old debt from the Earl of Chester. The Prince saved the Earl's life and helped him take back his city. Now, he wants Sir Roland Inness and the Invalid Company to help him take back his country.

Love these characters!

I am getting attached to the characters. Roland, Declan and Sir Roger. The Welsh are also fun. The story and the narrator are also great. Thanks for the great entertainment. I am looking forward eagerly to the next installment.

Excellent!

I loved this book! Couldn’t put it down; as with all in this series. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys mediaeval adventure stories. Lots of swash and buckle with a bit of history and romance thrown in too. Wayne Grant is up there with the best authors in this genre. I enjoyed the narration by James Young and although I understand some listeners were disgruntled by his interpretation it didn’t bother me, the story was so good and all in all I think James has done a good job. His accents remained true to each character throughout and I found myself fully immersed in the story at all times. Can’t wait for the next book!

Lazy narration

Next time, take a few moments to learn the correct pronunciation of each name. Story was promising, but couldn't listen to the butchering of Welsh names any longer

Interesting medieval war story

Many twists in this tale, most of them plausible. A good adventure yarn that young adults and older would enjoy. Excellent impression of time and place.

Epic!

I bought this audiobook first from the series, drawn by recent studies into the history of Wales and the Welsh/Cymru, only then realising it was the 5th book in the series! I would have to start from the beginning. Such an amazing combination of vivid sub-stories and great characters all interwoven with actual historical events and figureheads of the time, set upon superb backdrops throughout the British isles and Europe! This volume by far was my most anticipated, having followed the epic saga - one of many facets, easily followed, well written and ever engaging - it only deepened my interest and curiosity as to where it would now set off into Wales! The story is in constant motion and the author does a well to draw up fantastic dialogue between hearty characters, some new, some familiar, venturing through rough landscapes and wild seas, all colliding to achieve a story of epic proportions! The only thing that has left me cringing at times, has been the pronunciation of some Welsh names/places. I think the narrator does extraordinarily well covering such a repertoire of voices and accents as well as he does, to which he ought to be commended on the whole, unfortunately it was just the names and places that I was most drawn to that alas fell short. However, nothing short of epic on the whole!
