#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Buffett offers his philosophy on life and how to live it, “like sitting with Buffett at a beachside bar, listening to him spin tales” (Time).

“Buffett took his family on a three-week trek around the Caribbean. . . . His colorful travelogue is interspersed with memoirs of his youth and music career—both of which revolve around his continuing search for the perfect fishing spot.”—USA Today

For Parrotheads, armchair adventurers, and anyone who appreciates a good yarn and a hearty laugh, here is the ultimate backstage pass. You’ll read the kind of stories Jimmy usually reserves for his closest friends and you'll see a wonderful, wacky life through the eyes of the man who's lived it.

Jimmy takes us from the legendary pirate coves of the Florida Keys to the ruins of ancient Cartegena. Along the way, we hear a tale or two of how he got his start in New Orleans, how he discovered his passion for flying planes, and how he almost died in a watery crash in Nantucket harbor. We follow Jimmy to jungle outposts in Costa Rica and on a meandering trip down the Amazon, through hair-raising negotiations with gun-toting customs officials and a three-year-old aspiring co-pilot. And he is the inimitable Jimmy Buffett through it all.

Reseñas de la Crítica

Jimmy Buffett "has gregarious charm . . . and a bottomless well of stories to tell. . . . Reading A Pirate Looks at Fifty is like sitting with Buffett at a beachside bar, listening to him spin tales . . . discourse on life . . . and share nifty bits of geography and history."—Time

"Fulfilling his peripatetic pirate lifestyle fantasies, rocker Jimmy Buffett took his family on a three-week trek around the Caribbean in celebration of his 50th. His colorful travelogue is interspersed with memoirs of his youth and music career--both of which revolve around his continuing search for the perfect fishing spot. But Buffett also imparts useful understandings gained from childhood through parenthood, and a valuable account of what it was like growing up in the '50s."—USA Today

"The fun-loving Man from Margaritaville parses his hell-bent half-century."—People

The story he tells of his life from the “my life in 400 words or less” to the full tale he spins throughout is a fascinating life of a fascinating man. I would love to know what he did after 50. Don Johnson is not a great narrator. I read a review that thought he was into it not focused or something. I don’t think so. I just think Don is old. His voice is rough and not pleasing and he honestly isn’t at this point a great reader of the story. But if you are a Buffet fan you will be fascinated by this tale of his his first 50 years.

Jimmy’s story is great.

loved the narration and the way he used past stories and blended them with the new and ongoing story that was Jimmy

It is great to hear this book on Audible, especially read by Jimmy' s good friend Don Johnson, I thought the inflection and life experience in Don's voice made up for anything that was lacking. Also the fact that he knew Jimmy well really made it special. The depth of life Jimmy lived is amazing, the chances he took, the dreams he realized were astonishing. Knowing this book was written almost 30 years ago explaines the sharpness of Jimmy's memories. It's always to enter Jimmy's world through his books, now can someone please make "Where is Joe Merchant?" an audiobook???

Long ovedue Audio version is great!

I love Buttett so thought this was a no brainer and bought it straight away. then I started it and I am so regretting it. it sounds like Johnson is doing other things while reading this , the mic must be a table mic or something as sometime you can really hear it and others his head is so far away I wonder if he is still in the same room. the story is great, at least what I can hear of it. I am almost halfway but I really don't think I can finish this. too bad

narrator is so bad

I wanted to love this book because I'm a parrothead and still play my Jimmy Buffet CD's often. But I was full up before I got halfway there. Just got bored with the banter, definitely not interested in the long descriptions of boats, airplanes, and fishing, and overall had the feeling of being forcefed too much information instead of connecting with the person. Also admire Don Johnson, but his normally honey southern voice sounded hoarse after awhile and...he just had so much detail and description to read, it kind of ran together. I couldn't finish the book. Jimmy Buffet was a better writer when he set it to music. He had a full, fun life, but it didn't reach me in his memoir. I gave it three stars because his music does resonate with me. But disappointed that the book didn't have the same charm.

Love Jimmy, but not the book
