Compelling series - great final entry

I enjoyed all 4 books in this series (sometimes called Mortal Engines; sometimes called Hungry City Chronicles) equally. Barnaby Edwards's performance is nuanced and skilled; you can tell right away who's talking and can get to know the characters better based on how he brings them to life. I'm very excited for the movie of book 1 (Mortal Engines), which comes out later this year. Great sci-fi series, highly recommended.

An amazing series, the end is amazing.

Ive not really written that many book reviews. This series is quite good and these 4 books i listened to are a story I think Ill always remember. For me the ending in particularly appealing as I found it bittersweet, epic, real and tearfull. Im not even really sure how to describe the experience of this series and how much I enjoyed it.

So I will say this, this series presents a hostile, yet rich world full of problems that people dont really have answers for, fight and war with each other, brutalize each other and more often than not justify their actions based on their own personal experiences.

Much like real life. If this series is anything it's a testiment to humans ability to be a rainbow of colorful people both bad and good and somewhere in between. Like all the best stories it contains lessons people can learn from, if we just took more time to think about our actions.

While part of me had wished some of these characters had a happier or perhaps more detailed ending I wouldnt change anything the author has written here. The way it closes these characters stories and then moves on, is the truth of all stories, time moves on and eventually leaves behind all characters.

Well perhaps one gets to go on a little longer than the others, lol. The last of the Lazarus Brigade indeed.

If I had to ask for anything else from this story it would have been a last scene for O.D.I.N. as it ended itself. I was curious if it was truly sentient and what it might have done if given a chance to think for itself, but it certainly forfilled its creators purpose, if in a different manner than intended.

Fantastic Ending

This book, and the series at that, seemed to whisk by so quickly. It really was a fun ride. I really didn't want it to end, and I felt like it was never going to, but when it was said and done, it felt so.... fitting.... Subtle. The performance is one of the best I've heard. I'm very excited that they're making these into movies. I can't wait to hop onto the traction cities again.

Mortal Engines Series

I have just binge listened to this fantastic series of books. I read them years ago but to hear Philip Reeves world and characters brought to life by Barnaby Edwards made me re-read them. The stories throughout the Mortal Engine series really ignite the imagination, they are so solidly thought out. This is definitely one series I would be happy to listen to over and over.

Terrific book

Loved the whole series, this book convinced me to stop sleeping around and find a wife. It will change your life, I was but a boy before I read this book, now I have blossomed into a man.

(I hope they don't ruin the film now)

Epic and involving

The final part of The Mortal Engines is probably the best, an excellent four part story that faltered a little with part two for me. I urge anyone who enjoys an involving and sometimes very moving adventure to give it a listen. Barnaby Edwards is brilliant! Thanks Philip Reeve for so many hours of gripping story telling. I am off to investigate more of his writings now.

Utterly fantastic

There are very few books I would rate so highly. This brings the other 3 mortal engines to a brilliant conclusion and Philip Reeve has created something amazing. The reader was great too. Make sure you read the other 3 books first though

Fantastic Series

I was a little slow getting into the flow of the first book, but once I did I crammed the full series on my daily work commute. Wonderful story and characters, especially the indomitable Hester!

What an adventure!

I’ve just finished this, the 4th and final book in Mortal Engines Quartet...and what a series!

The writing always kept me interested and never laboured too much despite the plots get more complex and intertwined as the books progressed. I really started to get to know and enjoy the characters, in particular the unusual dynamics of the main characters of Tom and Hester as well as my personal favourite, Professor Nimrod Pennyroyal, the likeable rogue and conman.

The narration by Barnaby Edwards is superb. His range of accents and voices really had me mentally picturing the characters who were very believable.

All in all, a fantastic read and I’m sad to have finished the series. I’ve still got the film to look forward to...let’s hope they stuck to the books and don’t ‘Hollywoodize’ it too much!

Childhood read rediscovered

Just finished trought the whole series, I remember reading the first book as a kid. I loved the setting and the characters. Now I got to appreciate the interactions among them with a different prospective. And i really loved the ending, which was perfect in the way the narrator portraits it!
