A mutilated body is found dumped at Cowane's Hospital in the heart of historic Stirling. For DCI Malcolm Ford it's like nothing he's ever seen before, the savagery of the crime making him want to catch the murderer before he strikes again. For reporter Donna Blake it's a shot at the big time, a chance to get her career back on track and prove all the doubters wrong. The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger. DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

Publisher's Summary
When the luxury cruiser, hastily renamed Great Britain, berths in Kinloch harbour, the pressure is on DCI Jim Daley. The UK government are taking a high-powered group of businessmen and women on a tour of the British isles, golfing and seeing the sights, as part of a push for global trade. But when one of the crew goes missing, and an elderly local ornithologist disappears, will the pressure become too great?
The arrival of a face from the past sends Daley’s world into a tailspin. And the lives of the passengers and crew of SS Great Britain as well as the country’s economic future are in jeopardy. DS Brian Scott comes to the fore and, replete with a temporary promotion, is once more - most reluctantly, in his case - back at sea.
Daley faces a life and death struggle, but is this his last throw of the dice?

ends in agonizing cliff hanger, so disappointing
As in the previous books, absolutely Love the characters, especially Scott, but the whole cast is engaging. Great story., I was totally engrossed in the mystery, for once I did not guess early on who the true villain was. Then, in the final chapter the author turns to the dark side, leaving us with a very unpleasant cliffhanger. If I knew how bad the ending would be, I surly would have waited for the next in the series and read as one. Up till now I thought this series to be one of the best, now not so sure.

Solid Installment
Good story, but not my favorite. I prefer mysteries where I have a fair shot at solving it. I felt this was a situation where the author kept far too much from the reader and sort of did a gotcha at the end. The narrator is absolutely fantastic for these books and a delight to listen to. I really enjoy all the characters with the exception of Jim's wife Liz. I find their relationship tedious but thankfully, she's not in the book much. Well worth the listen.

Be careful, this is NOT the sequel to Book 3
After I finished Dark Suits and Sad Songs this was listed as next in series, but it’s not. It is a really good story, but it was a spoiler for the book I should have read as Book 4. The books aren’t labeled well on Amazon, a problem I’ve found with many series.
