During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

20,000 leagues is a must read classic. It is full of amazing imagery of the ocean floor, much of which holds up even to this day. Jules Verne was fascinated by the natural world and is at his best discussing natural phenomena both real and imagined. David Linski puts passion into the words of the ever so mysterious Nemo. He’s able to give us accents and turns of phrase without beating the listener over the head with excess sound. This is an audiobook that I turn to as a relisten if I want to relax and see the depths of the ocean.

Best reading of this story

Definitely ahead of it’s time, but not ahead of ours. By today’s standards, it reads more like a naturalist novel than sci fi. I found that my eyes glossed over through several parts of this novel. It was still a well written book and an excellent adventure. The unabridged narration was outstanding.

story is very good fun to imagine and build the scene. Narration is good but some of the voices are a little to similar

engaging

Such a fun, fantastical journey this was! I never read it as a kid and felt like I had to at least experience it once. I'm glad I did.

A great classic, read wonderfully!

A good book to be sure, but Verne often goes into incredible detail of technology or biology. I can see why some people would definitely appreciate that level of immersion, but I find I'm more fond of Wells' pseudoscience approach which is detailed, but not to an overwhelming degree. I'd add this particular version was well read and very enjoyable.

Too Technical at Times

growing up I have tried to read this story many times, but listening to this story of 20,000 leagues under the sea, has been not only inspirational but awe inspiring, this story I thought was going to include sea monsters and giant octopuses but instead it was a story of imprisonment and also joy, you are able to enjoy all the vastness of the ocean and things you've always wondered about when it came down to the unknown.

Captain Nemo even took them to Atlantis and only seen a small part of it, showed them underwater forests, and took them hunting underwater and off of water on mysterious lands, this story is something I will listen to multiple times not because I didn't grasp anything but the moral of this story is something that's always going to touch my heart and the fact that it was written in the 1870s makes it even more close to my heart and is special to me and this is just something that I'm never going to be able to let go.

I'm starstruck

I really enjoyed this story. The beginning was fast paced and exciting; the middle could be a little slow at times as the details of their various excursions are detailed; the ending moves rapidly as well. The narrator did an excellent job. With a mediocre narrator those slow parts could have been very tough to get through.

A very well done reading of a classic!

Excellent story telling and an amazing adventure. I felt the spray of the ocean and saw the ocean through the professor’s eyes. I’m only sorry I hadn’t read this book sooner.

Exceptional
