He was a survivor - a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war.

Fate touches him one chill winter’s day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale, of a nation on the road to recovery.

This is the story of a lie that became the most powerful kind of truth. A timeless novel as urgently compelling as War Day or Alas, Babylon, David Brin’s The Postman is the dramatically moving saga of a man who rekindled the spirit of America through the power of a dream, from a modern master of science fiction.

After the end of the world, a desperate wanderer finds a mail truck. He starts faking being a postman ...

I read the original story back in 1984. Back then, I didn't believe that society could fall apart in my lifetime.

Here in the future, 2020, we've had a year of extreme polarization in a pandemic. One thing holding society together has been the postal service. "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." The USPS has been in the news a lot in 2020. I don't want to dwell on that -- but all that happened made the book more relevant. The book got renewed life and the author made an update. This revised 2020 edition is what gets read here.

Here in 2020, The Postman was a lot more powerful for me. The narration by Kevin Kenerly is excellent.

Highly recommended.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night

Did not expect this to be so engaging when I started. Absolutely loved it. Just wish it was long or had a sequel. Such a great story about post apocalyptic society’s. Very grounded setting.

Terrific listen

The book is so much better than the movie! Don't get me wrong, the movie was great. Kevin Costner movies are like that, but I am surprised how much they cut out/completely changed the movie from the original book. This is a must read! Do glad I came across this! Thank you ☺️

Loved the movie, and the book is so much better!

I liked the movie but absolutely loved this book. more realistic to current events.

Really good listen!

Even though I'm largely burned out on post-apocalyptic stories, this one really drew me in with its optimism and warmth. Great performance from the reader, too.

excellent post-apocalyptic novel

An incredible take on the genre that never forgets to examine human nature. A great read

Fantastic examination of society

A great idea can move mountains, this story tells us that nothing can be greater than creating an idea and watch it grow.

Hope the one thing that makes us human

So much better than the movie!!!! If they would have stuck with this it would have been amazing!

Better

It is an interesting and optimistic take on the post apocalyptic genre. However, it is reek with what Zizek calls "nostalgia for the present". The U.S. was never great. It was built on genocide and slavery. When our forefathers were fighting tyrants oceans away, black kids did not have a right to sit next to white kids. Even today, we are supplying made in USA weapons to murder brown children you know where. So, I found it amusing to listen to the naivete of the character's musings about who will take responsibility if he can't restore the United States.

Interesting premise

My nephew recommended both the movie and the book, and it was a great suggestion. If you've seen the movie, the book may throw you for a loop. The book is much richer and different enough that you may feel like you're experiencing a different story. Much post-apocalyptic literature contains little hope. In contrast, The Postman looks at a world without hope and finds a way to bring it back. A great read if you like dystopian literature.

A dystopian novel with a ray of hope.
