Amazing short story!

This is the second Orphan x book I have listened to and will continue with the series. This short story is a great introduction to the character. The narrator does a great job!

A Small Story Done Right

There’s something almost surgical about Gregg Hurwitz’s writing. Paired with Scott Brick’s narration, every sentence feels measured. The words land with a quiet confidence that pulls you deeper into the story.

It’s only thirty minutes long, but it never feels small. What starts as an ordinary assignment for an intern quickly turns darker, carrying a sense of betrayal, vulnerability, and tension that lingers throughout the story.

What I enjoyed most was the atmosphere. The narration carries a certain edge to it, a dry confidence that fits Evan Smoak’s world perfectly. Listening to it, I wasn’t just following the story. I could see it. The scenes unfolded like a film playing in the background of my mind. A glance, a decision, a moment of panic. Small details that gain weight because of how they’re written and delivered.

For a short story, it leaves a surprisingly lasting impression. That’s a credit to both Hurwitz’s precision as a writer and Scott Brick’s ability to give life to every page.

Don’t expect to breath for 30 minutes. You’ll be holding your breath until the end. Also, I’m guessing we have a new character in Orphan X’s world. And, it’s a good one!
