『遠野物語』は日本民俗学の父・柳田国男が、遠野地方で生まれ育った佐々木喜善から民話や伝承を聞き集めて、100年以上前に刊行したものです。
江戸時代、遠野地方は内陸部と沿岸部を結ぶ交易の拠点として多くの人々が集まり、そこに多くの物語・民話が集まったと言われています。
山間の閉ざされた地で口々に広がり、語り紡がれてきた伝説・伝承は、現代に生きる私たちにも何か大切なことを語りかけてくるようです。
＜柳田国男（やなぎだ・くにお）＞
1875年、兵庫県生まれ。東京帝国大学卒業後、農商務省に勤務。貴族院書記官長を経て、朝日新聞社客員となる。1935年、「民間伝承の会(のち日本民俗学会)」を創始し、日本民俗学を確立する。1951年、文化勲章受賞。1962年没。主な著書に『遠野物語』『海上の道』『妖怪談義』『桃太郎の誕生』『木綿以前の事』他多数。
