For the Khargan!

Great voicing, great story. A lot of things come together from across the series.

Best yet

If you've been following the journey that Chris Wraight started in "Scars" then you will not be disappointed. Thus far, this has been my favorite Siege of Terra book.

It should have been perfect but...

First, any WH novel by Mister Chris of the Wraight is bound to be a hit.
Credit where it's due, he breathe life to the V Legion, gave them such an interesting and gripping story arc that one can follow and love.

John French managed both in Solar War and Mortis to make a depressing and hopeless siege even worse, and by Warhawk, I too am feeling that malaise the Loyalists were feeling. We needed a solid victory dang it, and while Saturnine was a marvel, Mortis made it almost pointless. Then again, that's the Warmaster job to make impossible things possible so that's that.
So the retaking of the Lion's Gate Spaceport was a welcome relief. I am unashamedly a Loyalist fan, so I hope the last two books can detail some major wins. Though we all know where all these all end don't we?

Now for the one gripe.
I'm pretty sure it's not just me but for FETH's sake! How can faceless Erebus have the capacity slay Erda?! He's the most beloved HH character to hate but still, I would imagine she is infinitely more powerful than the knife wielding colchisian. Still, it was left open that she could have survived, or let it all happen anyway.

That alone for me ruined the story, and her arc. She deserved more fleshing out. On the whole tho I thoroughly enjoyed it, after LatD and of course Saturnine. But her pathetic death lingers like a bad taste in the mouth.

Actual tears

I’m sleep deprived from having a newborn, but this book had me sobbing to myself as I listened to it. Full of emotion, beautifully written, the best Horus heresy book to date.

The dude reading this was stellar! Deserves an award! this guy encapsulates every feeling you can imagine.

Takes a bit to get going but does get there

Manages to not feel perfunctory as it winds down toward the story beats we all know are coming. Pacing was a bit awkward in that it was a little languid at first and then gets very fast and kind of choppy, but I did want to get back to each focal point for the most part so it did work. The showdown promised on the cover did not disappoint, even if this feels a bit flat overall with so many of the big players in the larger storyline absent.

Definitely worth the listen, just understand it takes a while to gear up.

Enjoyed the entire ride

We touched base with all of our POV characters again. The death guard and white scars had their moments. Daddy Sigismund was doing what he does best. And the real King Katsu-hiro was doing his thing.

I agree a slow start getting all the pieces into play but when it’s time it GOES HARD!
