On one of the city's hottest nights, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park - and into a hellish new investigation. The victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of The Lake in the park. Around her neck is a single red ribbon. Her hands are posed, as if in prayer. But it is the eyes - removed with such precision, as if done by the careful hand of a surgeon - that have Dallas most alarmed.

As more bodies turn up, each with the same defining scars, Eve is frantic for answers. Against her instincts, she accepts help from a psychic who offers one vision after another - each with shockingly accurate details of the murders. And when partner and friend Peabody is badly injured after escaping an attack, the stakes are raised. Are the eyes a symbol? A twisted religious ritual? A souvenir?

With help from her husband, Roarke, Dallas must uncover the killer's motivation before another vision becomes another nightmare.

I absolutely love all the JD Robb In Death audiobooks. I can't even imagine reading these books now as I know the voices of my characters. Start at book 1 and listen to them all you will not be disappointed. It is great to hear how each of the characters grow.

I enjoyed this installment a lot. The story was well written and the mystery took several twists and turns. Eve and Roarke were their usual selves and Mavis and Leonardo both made a couple of appearances - which were well done. It's enjoyable watching Peabody's character develop as both a woman and a cop and I enjoyed both Feeny and McNab's contributions. I'm also enjoying Eve and Dr. Mira's evolving co-worker/mentor/friend/sustitute mother relationship. The "small" addittion of a paranormal element ("visions/psychic abilities) was well done too.

Another Good Installment

I've purchased all but 3 of the "In Death" series, and this book has been the BEST... VERY riveting..Susan Olsen does a superb job narrating and KUDOS to J. D. Robb for keeping us in suspence after Peabody's "accident". I am eagerly awaiting my next download...

Couldn't stop listening...

Wow!! What a ride. This was a hard read on many levels.but a gut wrenching story. JDR really brought out the feels in this one. The story begins when the body of a young mother is discovered in the park with a red ribbon around her neck and her eyes removed. Sha has been beaten, raped and left posed on the rocks in the park. Who could have done such a horrible thing? As Eve and Peabody begin to investigate a psychic comes forward offering her help. The ever skeptical Eve eventually caves and accepts her help but still with a grain of salt. As the killer steps up his game it becomes a trigger for Eve, dredging up events from her horrendous past. As the investigation progresses, no-one could have foreseen the consequences ahead, as Det. Peabody gets caught in the killers crosshairs. But Peabody’s brutal attack cracks the case wide open and the killer is apprehended. Culling through the evidence after apprehending the killer, something doesn't add up as there is a missing pair of eyes. This has our Eve thinking copycat, but who could have cashed in on the killers spree with on of their own? A powerful and emotional read, JD Robb at her best. Can't wait for the next book.

This was a great book in the In Death series, mainly because Peabody played a more prominent role. Peabody and Dallas are hunting for a serial killer who is murdering young women with a red ribbon, or cord. He is a huge man and very strong - also extremely insane and cruel. Eve knows he hates women and makes a point on TV news show, hosted by a woman, that two police women are disdainful of him and will catch him. This does what Eve hopes it will do - it causes him to act against one of the three women.
Now the characters: Peabody is my favorite. She is smart, funny, kind, loving, loyal and down to earth. I absolutely love her and her man, Ian McNabb. They are wonderful together. Eve is another kettle of fish. I don't know why I love this series so much when I dislike Eve so much. Maybe it is interesting because Eve is so flawed. She only has flashes of humanity. Mostly she is obnoxious, rude, mean and dismissive of people. She is downright hateful to Sommersett, who is like a father to Roark, takes care of Eve's house and clothing, feeds her and entertains her friends. She snarls at him and tells him she is ugly. She makes a point of doing things that make his job harder, such as leaving her car in front of the house and throwing her jacket on the newel posts. She is rude and excessively dismissive of most people she runs into on her job, such as witnesses, doormen, receptionists, and just about anyone else. She is sanctimonious and self important. Eve believes that what she is doing and feeling is the most important things going on. She relates everything to her hard life as a child. It was hard, we get it, but other people had bad lives too and get over it - including Roark who had a terrible youth until Sommersett came along and saved him as a child. Speaking of Roark, I love him too, and cannot understand for the life of me why he loves Eve so much and why he thinks she is so cute in her meanness. She puts him second to her job at all times and expects him to drop his important work duties to help her with her crime solving. She acts as if playing hostess is abhorrent and ditches those roles at the drop of the hat.

Another character that gets on my nerves is Mavis. She is incredibly stupid and shallow and her magalicious slang is beyond aggravating, as is her screeching , which is supposed to be singing. But Mavis is harmless because she is kind and loving. I just can't get why she loves Eve so much.

I have bashed some of the characters enough now. In addition to Peabody and McNabb, there are a lot of great characters such as Morris, Fenney, Charles, Louise, and others. All in all, I love to listen to this series and find the great majority of the books to be extremely interesting and fun. Nora Roberts is a master story teller and Erikson is a masterful narrator.
