No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city - not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband Roarke at her disposal - but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used night vision to find their way through the cozy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen...

Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan - and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas' strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, and Dallas needs to solve this case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories - and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back - and with Roarke providing the kind of help only he can give - Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who's behind them.

The mysteries in all these stories (I've listened to five) are first rate, the problem lies in the unrealistic relationship between Eve and Roarke, and the stupid sex scenes. These make the stories hokey. No one would put up with Eve, particularly not the richest, best looking and devoted male. She frequently acts like a child, and please spare me the excuse of her background, but he is so patient and thinks so highly of her, he puts up with everything.

I'm not prude but I don't care about their sex - I don't want it in a mystery - just allude to it. The mysteries stand on their own merit...

good mystery, unrealistic relationships

Enjoyed this book, well-plotted and complicated. Only complaint -- I know that many individuals really appreciate the sex scenes, but I could do with a few less. They tend to be repetitive.

A Good Thriller

I have been reading theses books for years, these never disappoint, wish there was less sex details but great, I just skip the sex..

intense

Three things I liked about this book that were different from most of the series:
1. This mystery didn’t involve sex abuse and greatly minimized Eve’s own PTSD.
2. The villainous backstory was well developed, scary, and unearthed with unique investigative twists.
3. This one featured multiple members of team Dallas interacting with kid Nixie, maximizing heart.

This worked okay as a standalone, however several of the prior books were mentioned, including the ones connected to Peabody’s injury, Mavis’ pregnancy, and the doc’s brush with death.

A deeper dive than most in this series

Great listen! I've listened to all the prior "in death" books and have found them to be consistently good reads/listens. That said, this is one of the best books in the series so far. And Susan Ericksen has to be one of the best storytellers/narrators there are.
