A moving portrait of love, loss, and chosen family.
- Kirkus Reviews
Original, deftly crafted, exceptional, emotionally engaging, memorably inspiring, and a simply compelling read from start to finish.
- Jim Cox (Midwest Book Review)
When Matthew’s brother dies, leaving behind a premature newborn daughter, one decision changes everything.
A lifelong bachelor with no plans for parenthood, Matthew must choose: walk away—or become a father overnight.
Unconditional is an emotionally powerful story of unexpected fatherhood and chosen family. Perfect for readers who love heartfelt, emotionally rich stories about parenthood, family, and the bonds that shape a life.
Meeting baby Allie turns Matthew’s world upside down. He trades carefree days for sleepless nights, diapers, and responsibilities he never imagined—but cannot turn away from. With the steady support of his loyal friend Sherry, he navigates the chaos of single fatherhood and discovers a love stronger than fear.
Spanning eighteen years, this coming-of-age story follows Matthew and Allie as they face loss, sacrifice, and the quiet courage of showing up for one another. When life tests them, Matthew and Allie must decide what truly matters—and how far unconditional love can carry them.
Heartfelt, honest, and deeply moving, this is a story for anyone who believes that family, in all its forms, can change a life forever.

From the very first page, I was drawn into the world as seen through Matthew’s eyes. What really hit me was how timeless the story felt. The themes of love, loss, sacrifice and friendship are compelling and relevant yesterday, today and always.
Matthew stole the show for me. He’s not flashy or dramatic—just solid, kind, and brave in a way that sticks with you. The way he embraces life’s unexpected “gift” even tho he has no prior experience and is wholly unfamiliar and unprepared for the many twists and turns that await him shows real integrity. His “roll up the sleeves and get to work” commitment along with his quiet strength made me think about how we respond to the unexpected and unforeseen challenges our own lives.
The writing itself is heartfelt. Stephen Kogon’s style isn’t complicated, but that’s what makes it so easy to connect with. There’s a warmth and authenticity in Matthew’s voice, a blend of the naiveté of being a new parent and the keen appreciation of the new reality that is just beginning to unfold before him.
I also loved the exploration between the different examples of love. From first love to the lifelong bond of friendship, from love lost and found to the love of a parent and child - which is the most profound expression of love - unconditional love.
If I had to sum up my thoughts in a sentence or two, I’d say this book shows us how to embrace life with all its challenges and teaches us that there is no higher purpose or calling than - to love ! It’s the kind of story that leaves a mark—quietly, permanently. I’d absolutely recommend it, especially to anyone who enjoys a novel that is “an experience”, rather than merely “a read”.
The enduring power of love
