Resumen del Editor

Now a milestone of unsolved true crime, the Hall-Mills case began in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1922 and lasted for over a decade. The killer has never been found, and the case continues to fascinate true-crime aficionados.

A bon vivant Episcopal minister, a not-so-virginal soprano in his choir. The wealthy wife. Her oddball brother. Their furtive maid. The snooping congregants. The bumbling detectives. And in the denouement, a trial, one of the more notable of America’s Jazz Age, covered by the likes of Damon Runyon, Dorothy Dix, and James Thurber. All of it hanging on the dramatic testimony of a single, strange witness of questionable veracity, a farmer the tabloids came to call "The Pig Woman." Almost everyone in this labyrinthine mystery had at least one secret, sometimes more, and the biggest one remains almost a hundred years later.

At Audible’s request, business and true crime journalist Bryan Burrough reopened the case, digging deep into records of the time. His narration in a warm Texas accent lends immediacy and intimacy to a classic New Jersey true crime, as listeners follow his reconstruction of the fateful double-murder…and the botched prosecution that became a national media circus in its day.

Kinda interesting

I forgot I started listening and was able to easily pick up where I left. The story was ok, but no real conclusion as it seems the case was never solved.

Long Time with Still No Ending

What a difficult situation! Very good writing and narration. It sounds almost like a bad circus! So much involved, possibly, but nothing in concrete. A good read that I did enjoy (it seemed to go by fast), despite the subject matter. Thank you.

Til murder do us part

Very interesting and straightforward. The narrator read at a steady pace so I was able to imagine the scenes as if I was there.

Another forgotten crime of the century

This case was on the same level as Leopold and Loeb or the Lindbergh baby case in terms of national recognition. While not as scandalous or tragic as those 2 cases, this case may have helped inspire “The Great Gatsby.” Overall, it’s interesting to listen to how the trial progressed over the years.

Plus it’s NJ true crime. It’s weird out here.

The narrator spoke a little fast, so I used .9x to listen.

Being from New Brunswick New Jersey I had to hear!

Each and every place spoken in this book took me back to my childhood! Buckelew Park ( yes that’s how it’s spelled, playing tennis, my grandmother’s house was a walk around the block to Rutgers gym! Lavallet New Jersey, McGee st, Pennsylvania Avenue! Reading this I could see the old New Brunswick I grew up in! Thank you!

nice

I read LOTS of true crime. I’ve read about this case before, but thought I’d give this book a try to see their take on the story. There’s too much info, a very confusing case with more than one trial, and dozens of witnesses.
