Resumen del Editor

Will Lacie Montgomery hold fast to her greatest deception, or succumb to the seductive stranger who is bent on learning the truth?

From acclaimed romance writer Rexanne Becnel comes a story of passion and hidden identity in the post-war American South. As a dark figure on horseback approaches the resplendent Louisiana estate of Sparrow Hill, a chill runs through Lacie Montgomery, the lovely head of the Sparrow Hill School for Young Ladies, because she is not exactly who she appears to be - and the exposure of her darkest secret could mean the closing of her beloved school and the end of its rightful place in the Kimbell family legacy.

But Dillon Lockwood, the bastard Kimbell son, can see right through her, and he plans to extract her secret and save his family’s fortune, even if it means taking her to his bed, where deceit will crumble in the heat of a lover’s embrace.

Had to speed it up

Had to speed it up in order to get through this because I cannot stand the performers, accent or voice. Yes, this story was so frustrating to me. I wanted to knock her (the heroine) over the head so many times.

Infuriatingly happy

The story is amazing although there were times where I wanted to throttle the hero and heroine. Times where I would yell and say walk away. That being said the story was infuriatingly happy. I love happily ever after.

Old school

I don't know why I keep reading these trashy 80s and 90s romances, I think it's like rubber necking an accident scene or something -- the women are invariably treated poorly by the men and never seem to get the better of them. The men insult and humiliate the women and the women all lap it up because they have only hormones to guide their thoughts and actions. This is one of those trashy romances with all the Becnel hallmarks I've seen in her other Audible Escape books. I am heartily sick of "she told herself", "she reminded herself". Gah! Did’t the author use a competent editor? You'd think a 23 yr old school teacher in the 1870s would have more wits with her than getting bested at every turn. Truly annoying. Becnel sets up some of the most ridiculous and contrived scenes I've come across (like the bath scene) just to titillate the reader. As for the plot, nothing much happens: the heroine masquerades as the dead brother’s widow so she can save her school; the hero is the illegitimate half brother with a big chip on his shoulder, intent on uncovering her fraud so he can claim the ancestral home that he’s never been invited in. The bickering, the insults and the hero’s numerous acts of humiliation just never seem to end.

The narrator is OK. Her voice is a bit too graveling for a 23 yr old woman. Male voices are OK. She snorts and chuckles a bit too much.
