Narrator makes all the difference

This narrators voice remained mostly the same tone whether reading sensual parts or just normal conversation. I didn’t like it. Not sure if I can finish

Entertaining and wicked

This is my first time reading Madeline Hunter. I really enjoyed her book but think it was made even better by Mary Jane Wells. Miss Wells possesses a great ability to make many different types of voices. Each character was distinct, not necessarily in the tone, but the cadence and pitch. It was quite entertaining.
The book was very sexy, but not what I would call erotic. I like how Evies personality and strong will showed throughout. She was a fantastic main character. Her sister, Rebecca will make a fascinating subject of a future book I hope. As far as the male lead , Gareth was also a very strong character. With the distinct personality made even better by the narration. I loved his deadpan speech. His brothers will hopefully also make great main characters of their own. There was enough mystery about each of them that causes a lot of intrigue into their story.
Overall, I was very satisfied with this book. My only complaint is that it could’ve been longer, with a little bit more detail in some areas. I think with how well it was written a little more detail wouldn’t have detracted from the story.

Charming...and Sexy!

This is my first Madeline Hunter book and I was impressed by what a good storyteller she is. It was a breath of fresh air to have an historical romance set in England, but not set around “The Ton, ballrooms, and all the tiresome restrictions that go with those type of stories. This takes place in a small country town where our heroine, Eva, lives in gentile poverty with her younger sister, Rebecca, on what’s left of their family estate. She runs in our hero, Garrett, while out walking, he’s visiting his inherited property he hasn’t seen in years. I don’t want to say anything else because it’s all clues from here on out. I really liked the characters, the story, and the narrator was perfect. I liked that the this was a sweet, funny, sexy love story and a complicated (stolen paintings) mystery story also. Never a boring minute and I was sorry when it ended.

Not a cookie cutter romance

I enjoyed the fact that the storyline wasn’t the typical one for a historical romance. The storyline was entertaining, the narrator was perfect- overall fun listen!

Fun Treasure Hunt

I always enjoy listening to Mary Jane Wells. She is one of my favorites.

I was actually surprised how much I did enjoy this book. I like that the characters were different and not all overly wealthy compared to many Duke type of books. Eva was a strong heroine that did what it took to make sure she was able to care for her sister. I enjoyed the hunt for the paintings and the love story that developed between Eva and Gareth. I definitely want to read the next story and Eva's sister.

Very entertaining

I like this author. It has a true plot and story. I also like that everything wraps up nicely in the end- even the twists and surprises are explained.

Surprisingly good!

I expected very little from this title given the reported story line and cover picture, but one reviewer's comments caught my eye, and I decided to go for it. As it happens - I loved it! I loved the narration - particularly the hero's rather deadpan-ish voice - as well as the heroine's sassy one, both contributing to my enjoyment of the story. Really the book is carried by the narration (for me anyway) and the characters. Eva, the heroine, is strong, intelligent and delightfully wicked, and I found myself laughing out loud at the interactions between the characters. The story is interesting enough, given the rather limited options for this genre (which I happen to love anyway), and I especially appreciated that when the plot line ran out, the author let it go and concentrated on the relationship between the lovers - which is the main interest anyway. It's a fairy tale to be sure but one with more humor and self-awareness than most romances, which is why I gave it such a high rating.

Excellent listen!

The reviews were correct! Loved the writing and narration. I also agree that once the intrigue was done, it was done and the author did not try to drag it out. It was well written and made me laugh out loud more then once. I’ve already downloaded the next one and can’t wait to start it!

Great writing & narration; story beyond ordinary

I love this voice artist. She does a variety of accents well and does a good job with both female and male voices. It was my first time "reading" anything written by Madeline Hunter, but the writing is superior to typical historical romance, and everything seems plausible. Finally a story about people other than lords and ladies!

Meh...

I found this book boring. Lots of sex and not much else. The "mystery" was glaringly obvious early on in the book.
