Boring

I found this book very boring. Halfway through I was still waiting for it to get interesting. The characters weren't terribly interesting or sympathetic. Almost no character building was done. With better execution I think it could've been awesome. But the writing felt kind of rough to me.

The narrator was decent, but not very good at female voices.

Enjoyable

Where does The Witch's Ladder rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The narrator was expressive and the voices were easily distinguishable. The accent of the Latin Detective was very realistic and not caricature at all.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

It could have been more descriptive. I had a hard time picturing the characters and their surroundings.

Have you listened to any of Eric A. Shelman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any that I am aware of.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoyed the lightheartedness late in the story.

Any additional comments?

Overall, it was an enjoyable story and was told very well.

Interesting and Intriguing read

Where does The Witch's Ladder rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Among all the audiobooks I listened to of this genre, The Witch's Ladder would place in the top 20.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Lillith because of her non apologetic attitude. She doesn't care what you think or what comes out of her mouth. I found her character the most interesting.

What does Eric A. Shelman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Eric Shelman brings the book to life. He has great pace, inflection is a very enthusiastic narrator. He does not bore you and manages to assist you in envisioning the scenes as they happen.

ERic Shelman a brings great characters to life

the Witch's Ladder introduced me to the world of Tony and Lilith and Narrator Eric Shelman brought them to live adding another layer to already intriguing characters. I would recommend this to everyone who likes paranormal stories with a twist. Lilith is one of my favorite characters for her strength and she sure knows how to stand up to anyone.

So horrifically different, I couldn't put it down.

Any additional comments?

I had no idea what to expect, but this certainly wasn't your run of the mill cozy detective mystery. Detective Tony Marcella told the tale of a bizarre series of murders occurring at an institute for paranormal studies in his town. The deaths came fast and frequently and always with more description than I would expect... which sometimes made me wish less time had been spent on the gruesome descriptions. One in particular that stands out - I won't spoil by telling you who is the victim - was the description of stringy hamburger being blown out of someone's nose while their head was getting bashed in.Suffice it to say - I think this story has a very masculine bent to it... meaning, if you like gore and violence more than introspection and description, then you will probably really enjoy this book. I'm not so fond of that stuff, myself - but I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the exploration of paranormal experiences, from bilocation to various kinds of divination to temporal hypnosis and the witch's ladder, etc....I will check out the next book in the series, and mute the sound when he gets to the gory stuff... I want to hear the rest of what's happening, and I'm looking forward to more character development of the main character as the series continues.

different, but enjoyable

The Witches Ladder. I really liked the magic and witchcraft being thrown in to present day mystery, but it is totally different then most mysteries out there. it was not a bad story, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I kept listening for the narrator

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. I didn't find the story tremendously engaging and I had trouble relating to many of the characters. It didn't suck me in and I had to start and stop quite a bit just to get through it.

What was most disappointing about Dana E. Donovan’s story?

The gaggle of misguided psychics were all very two dimensional and even the descriptions of the murders were sort of bland. I wanted the story to be deeper and to evoke a clearer tale for my imagination.

What about Eric A. Shelman’s performance did you like?

All of it. He is a very gifted narrator and saved this book, in my opinion. He has the gumshoe voice of Marcella so well developed. He would be an incredible reader for most books. His female voices sounded believable. Honestly, the narration was the best part of the book.

Did The Witch's Ladder inspire you to do anything?

Well, it inspired me to look up Eric Shelman and I found out he also wrote some books. If he writes half as well as he narrates it will be entertaining to check out some of his work.

Any additional comments?

The book is not terrible, it just isn't as richly detailed as I typically like my story. This would be a fun car listen.

A bit like Heroes (TV show)

I listened to this book with great attention in the beginning. I found the definitions for all the different types of psychic powers to be fascinating. I was familiar with almost all of them, but never presented like this. Then my attention started to wander. I really hate losing track of what's going on and having to rewind and so on so I steeled myself to listen to the rest of the book and not get too disappointed the best was over. However, it suddenly picked back up and got really interesting again and I never got lost again. It was a thrilling ride although a bit gory and a few times I had to groan "Oh, come on!" I really liked the detectives and am glad this is Book 1. Look forward to the next one - wonder where it will lead?
The narrator was perfect for the role of the detectives and did a great job will all the voices.
I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
